Thé Gershwin side is made a vehicle for display of Kostelanetz‘ wellâ€" seasoned and sound â€" conscious productions. The little â€" known Tchaikowsky‘s work is even more welcome. Unavailable, exâ€" cept through Kostelanetz playâ€" ing it on concert tour, it conâ€" tains the best dramatic music of this composer andâ€" follows a very coherent line of the opera. Much of it resembles the emoâ€" tional cauldron of his "Francesca da Rimini" but has greater reâ€" straint and conviction. Both sides of the record have wonâ€" derful recording, though the middle of the Tchaikowsky side in my copy; had one .briet flow. This Tchaikowsky is not just another potâ€"boiler presented in the name of a topâ€"selling comâ€" poser, but a masterwork far too long neglected. _ Richard Strauss in High Fiâ€" ‘delity, the Chitago Symphony under Fritz Reiner playing "Thus }Spake Zarathustra" and "Saâ€" lome‘s Dance of the Seven | Veils". Vie. LMâ€"1806. l The foremost modern interâ€" ipreters of Richard Straus, Reinâ€" er and the late Klemens Krauss, both re corded "Zarathustra". Both take 32 minutes to play it. The Krauss version came out ‘two years ago on London label, LLPâ€"232 and was a top demonâ€" stration record at the time. It takes the work on a formidable scale, even the lightest passages being none too subdued. Reiner also rejoices in the enormous sonorities of this score for organ and orchestra, but reduces some passages to the scale of chamber music, gaining great contrasts as well. The Krauss version recordâ€" ing still sounds impressive but Reiner‘s, in Victor‘s Orthophoâ€" nic technique, obviously gains in naturalness and definition and the widest range of dynamics. Also, current margin control gives the Victor disc nine minâ€" utes more space for "Salome‘s Dance" in which the endless reâ€" sourcefulness of Strauss‘ orcheâ€" stration is well served by the engineers and makes this record seem that much more brilliant among a sizeable crop of discs, currently comparable for reâ€" corded sound. Many record buyâ€" ers are aware that there are numerous records of better qualâ€" ity than almost all phonographs, but this one is particularly fine..
