Or gone out of your way to see one, which is even more to the point since opera is just as much made to be seen as to be heard. If you are like a lot of people I know, your mind is like a steel trap on the subject, ‘and isn‘t going to be pried open by anyâ€" thing short of a Marilyn Monroe doing a soupedâ€"up version of the Habenera from "Carmen". At the first whisper of a song that doesn‘t sound as though its either apeared on the Hit Paâ€" |rade or on the juke box down at Jo‘s Joint, you run rapidly o‘ the first note. These people know that Caruso wasn‘t a castâ€" away on a deserted island, and that Gotterdammerung ifn‘t a vulgar expression. Now for the opera â€" and walit just a minute there before you put down the Times and Guide in disgust. Sure, I know you aren‘t an opera lover. Probably only one half of one perâ€"cent of the Weston population is, come to that, and this happy little minority, like most of the shoemakers of America, knows the business inside out and can tell you which aria is from which opera at the mere flick are two of the many entertainers in Canadian‘ show business supporting the Easter Seal campaign this year. Far be it from me â€" despite the fact that I like opera just about as much &s I do a warm bed on & cold night â€" to deâ€" clare that all opéra is a thing of beauty and a joy for ever. I have seen and heard some which has either left me suffering from an immense boredom or else has been so badly performed that I wanted to fling a ripe tomato inâ€" to the widelyâ€"gaping jaws of the offending tenor, soprano, or what have you. There probably are, I‘m very sad to admit, some people living in your town who would yawn or chuek tomatoes from now to doomsday, but not one single spark of entertainâ€" ment or edification would come to them from the operatic }(olngl-on. For this unhappy group I have nothlngh but the most profound sympathy. â€" The great mass of people, though â€"â€" you, you and you. â€" I am convinced don‘t really disâ€" like opera. You simply haven‘t bothered or won‘t bother to try and find out what it is all about. You are like the dyedâ€"inâ€"theâ€" wool British type who after 30 years of beef and Yorkshire pudâ€" ding wouldn‘t be caught dead trying lobster a la Newburg. In all probability he would love the stuff too, but he is just too pigâ€" headed to give it a whirl. Of course he may not like it at first â€" but it could easily grow on him. s ‘Opera can be pretty much the same. First of all it needs to be tried, and then it takes a little concentration â€" perhaps even a littte effort, which is bound to do us good in these overâ€" simplified times â€" to arrive at an understanding of what it is all about. It appeals to two very ordinary human interests. One of them is a simple lover 6f muâ€" sic, and the other is the fascinaâ€" tion of a good story. That‘s all the best upera is â€" a good story told with fine music. This film was produced by the Ontario Hydro and deals specifically with the power proâ€" duced by the Adam Beck Staâ€" tion No. 2, and with the people who are involved with the powâ€" er production. I would call anyone a humourless blockhead, for instance, who couldn‘t find something to laugh at in, "The Marriage of Figaro", or "Der Fledermaus". "The Loons Necklace" is the title of the third film, and this movie may well prove the most interesting of the three. It conâ€" cerns an old Indian Legend about why the Loon has that peâ€" o next time the CBC or anyâ€"| one élse announces its intention of producing an opera, screw {our your courage to the stickâ€" ng point, arm yourself with en-‘ thusiasm, and tolerance, and fiv. the thing a look .and listen. t will probably be done in En%- lish on the CBC, and this will help your cause no end, since its better to know what the story is all about. Take "Aida" for inâ€" stance â€" I‘ve been listening to thi tremendously fine effort for years, but the first time I ever really appreciated it from beâ€" gining to end instead of just at the big arias, was when I saw it done in English at Covent Garden, London. â€" Meantime, I‘ll be looking forâ€" ward to the day when everyone in Weston, including the street cleaners and the bank managers. will start the morning with their own roaring renditions of "La Donna L Mobile", or the toreaâ€" dor song from Carmen.
