The Words From The Cross CHURCH SERVICES M. "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Para dise." (Luke 23:43. R.S.V.) In our Lord‘s secong saying from the Cross, He grants a dying revolutionary eternal peace. "Today you will be with me in Paradise," expresses a binding promise on the part of our Lord Jesus, to take the petitioner with Him into His heavenly Kingdom. Leslie D. Weatherhead (in "Personalities of the Passion") ‘ ""â€"~<l points out that when this one s criminal speaks to Jesus, he 4# Aliitmaes does so with a familiarity not [ used by any other person â€" P PM disciple or hearer. That the E. J man had been a schoolâ€"mate of e Jesus seems a little farâ€"fetched. 9 "alle, i ae" However, Weatherhead‘s arguâ€" M / W thesioiet ment that the sentenced man [ / / -w . _ B way endeavouring to obtain :.; /. §M# _ *« P release for the Jews from the . < hated Roman overlords, and @«% ie establish a kingdom in Israel ;. bo /.. aliil which would be something like 7. "â€" the Kingdom of God, sounds |‘". . quite feasible. The intentions F. j of the revolter may have been & i similar to those of Jesus, but his methods were far different. Fev. A. L. Borland Then, in a sudden flash of insight he realized that the way of suffering love, and not the way of the sword, was the only way in which the God‘s Kingdom could come into the hearts and souls of men. Who is this criminal to receive such a reward? Scholars largely agree that he need not have been the traditional thief of some interpretations, but could easily have been one of the many neverâ€"sayâ€"die revolutionaries who pounced upon small Roman detachments at they moved through the valleys of Judaes. Finally caught, he was hanged on the usual crimâ€" ingl‘s cross. The words of his brother insurgent were seemingly the spur which finally turned his whole being towards the Lord of life. Having openly admitted that his own punishment was just, and that Jesus‘ was unjust since He had done nothâ€" ing wrong, he turned to the Lord with the earnest, grave inâ€" tent known only to a condemned, dying man, grasping for the only way of hope open to him â€" the Way of Jesus Christ! If the life with Jesus Christ in the hereafter is the richest and best of all things (and we believe that it is), surely it ought to be our greatest concern, and demand our supreme effort to begin living with Him now! For He is no longer a lonely figure hanging on a cross, but an everâ€"living, everâ€" present, interceding Lord and Saviour, ready, willing, and able to take every humble, repentant soul into eternal felâ€" lowship with Himself, beginning here, "today"! However, the tragedy of human experience is that men and women so often postpone the whole matter of the life in Christ until the last possible moment. What great things the condemned revolutionary with all his burning zeal and energy could have done for Jesus, o one will ever know,; except God who ordained his life. So with us. We are all rebels against God! We all revolt against His aythority! Most every one wishes that the Kingdom of God would come on earth, but each one wants it to come according to his or her own ideas. We are all essentially the same as the condemned criminals who were hanged with Jesus on that first Good Friday. There is for us, as for them, only one way pf hope â€" the Cross of Jesus Christ! . ‘ When we come in all earnestness and sincerity to the crucified Lord, He opens for each one of us the door of heaven. When we turn wholeheartedly to Him, He grants the deepest intents of our hearts. When we confess Him as Lord and Saviour, He grants to us also this greatest of all blessings â€" to be with Him in Paradise! + He was not disappointed, for Jesus‘ reply opened the way to heaven for him. The Son of God must have known the true gincerity of his request, and as always, when anyone came to Him in all earnestness He granted the greatest blessing of all, to be with Him in Paradise! And this rebel was the first to enter God‘s Kingdom through the power of the Cross! A Lenten Series By The Westion and District Ministerial Assn. by Rev. A. L. Borland, B.A., B.D.
