I went broke on a ‘drunk at Christmas and bust into a filling station to get some more money. Was still a bit drunk Wilen I landed in jail But I was sure sober by the time New Year‘s came along. UNLIKELY STORY. "New Year‘s always reminds me of the time I was in jail," he said. "It wasn‘t much of a jail. Small and old. It was dirty and smelled bad. The disinfectant they swabbed it out with was so strong it stung your nose when you came in from outside. But it couldn‘t kill the bad smell. "Remember lying there in my cell and listening to the church bells. And the fire station bell. It was right next to the jail. Remember thinking what a mess I‘d made of things and that poem about ring out the old, ring in the new. "Then this girl walked into the cell. Opened my eyes and there she was. Just like an angel. Turned out she was the sheriff‘s daughter. That‘s why she had the keys, Brought coffee, turkey sandwiches and cigarettes.. Stayed about fifâ€" teen minutes, I guess. Looking more angelic all the time. . ."When I heard her old man‘s footsteps I told her when I‘d done my time at the county jail I‘d be back. That‘s all I said. And all she said was: ‘I hope so. I do hope so.‘ But the way she said it, and what I saw in her eyes, stayed with me all the time I was in jail." He paused to light a cigarette. "So when you got out of jail you looked her up and marâ€" ried her," I said. He shook his head. "I looked her up but her father had lost the last election ‘for sheriff and they‘d moved. He was so bitter he didn‘t leave any address. He kept moving. So did I. Three years later I got flagged down for, speeding in Montana. Guess who the sheriff was." "Your future fatherâ€"inâ€"law," I said. He nodded. OVERHEARD ON THE AVENUE. Dear Clifford: As one of the mothâ€" ers who made the mistake of inviting "Scotty" to her home (at least I presume the person I invited was the one who wrote you under that name) allow me to say something in reply to his remarks about our children. "Scotty" was no doubt brought up in a home where the old motto of children being seen but not heard was in force. That‘s probably the reason he is such a lemon today with no more personality or original ideas than a dried prune. As he said in his letter, no offense meant.â€"Canadian Mother. I will admit that they talk a lot at meals and don‘t alâ€" ways sit properly but that‘s just because ofâ€"good spirits and restlessness that come of being loaded with energy which is natural with any healthy children. As for being "cheeky" they only say what comes to their minds which is their privilege as long as it isn‘t insulting or vulgar. i Renewed Parish Hall To Open January 20th Opening of the newly built addition and renovated Parish Hall at St. John‘s Anglican Church will take place on Tuesâ€" day evening, the 20th at 8 p.m. Bishop Wilkinson will officiate at the opening with representaâ€" tion from the Weston Town offiâ€" cials, the Clergy, Members of Parliament, Citizens of Weston and the surrounding communiâ€" ties.
