P Highway Safety Has _ Policeman As Pivot : THE WADING POOL, favored spot for the younger youngâ€" ‘area encompassing western North York and Northern Etobiâ€" , *-muWomudMoulDonnu,momlhox, _ peeted to attract record numbers of swimmers this year. All these facts point up to one thing: the need for a more comâ€" prehensive traffic safety educaâ€" tion program, so that all moâ€" torists have a clearer understandâ€" ing of their duties and responsiâ€" bilities when they seat themselves behind the steering wheel of an automobile. The privilege of drivâ€" ing on this country‘s highways is just that, a privilege, not a right, as so many seem to think. And like all privileges, it carries with it certain obligations. New Program Realizing this need for driver safety education an unparalleled accident prevention program is being kicked off in Ontario. It has as its focal point the traffic policeman. Its theme is "Help me prevent accidents." In the summer months ahead the average Canadian motorist will put more miles on his car than possibly during the remainâ€" ing months of the year. The Doâ€" minion Day weekend coming up will see more cars on Ontario‘s highways than at any other time previous. ~ Last year two and a quarter million drivers travelled 18,315,â€" 705,497 miles in Ontario. © Thursday. June 16. 1960 THE TIMES & GUIDE Similarly, every 16 and a half minutes | personal | injuries are sustained, oftentimes for life. An accident happens in Onâ€" tario every six minutes and 27 seconds. During 1959 somebody, a mo: torist, a passenger, a pedestrian, m child, died as the result of a motor â€" vehicle accident every seven hours and 23 minutes. To emphasize the importance of the policeman in his traffic law enforcement role the Ontario Department of ; Transport _ is sponsoring this special program of public safety education in coâ€" cperation with the attorneyâ€"genâ€" eral‘s department. "This is a new approach to the| problem of traffic accident preâ€" vention. As far as I have been! able to find out, it has never been attempted before in an organized way either in Canada or the United States,. But I am conâ€" vinced that the development of, better relations between the peoâ€"| ple in our communities and their| police departments will incvitably result in safer and more ordnrly; movement of traffic.‘ says Minâ€", ister of Transport John Yaremko of the new campaign. | sters at Weston‘s swimming pool, was thronged on last Satâ€" urday, official opening day of the pool. Serving the wide THE MAYOR SPEAKS at the first concert of the summer given by the Weston Silver Band. Mayor John Holley, of Weston, extends official greetings to the large and appreâ€" ciative audience attending the initial performance. of the 1960 season by Weston‘s famed musical organization. ; We cannot substantially imâ€" |prove our shameful traffic record |until drivers make up their minds [to stay within the speed limits, \Carcful engineering, traffic laws ind firm police work are necesâ€" \sary. But the burden belongs to ‘the driver. It is he who has deâ€" ‘liberately driven too fast. It is (he who must as deliberately slow down. 5 Only a few become directly inâ€" volved with the police. The result is that not many know by first hand experience what the police are doing and what they are tryâ€" ing to achieve for traffic safety. The large majority of citizens in a community only know what they read and hear. Invite Policeman Service clubs and women‘s wroups are urged to invite a policeman to their meetings to explain his traffic duties. Let him know that you are anxious to be more informed about his daily job. Clearly illustrating the imâ€" portance of safety education are the annual statistics that show, year after year, there is a definite relationship between traffic law violation and traffic accidents. Reports indicate that 61. per cent of drivers in fatal accidents were violating a traffic law at the time of the accident. Smart Alees Traffic laws are made to proâ€" tect liie and property and to facilitate the movement of trafâ€" fic. But too many smartâ€"alec driversâ€"and â€" pedestriansâ€"think that the observance of the law will take too long. So they disâ€" regard the law and often wind up having an accident that slows them down permanently. One phase of this program to foster community support of efâ€" {ective traffic law enforeement is _ labelied, _ "What _ everyone should know about policemen." Mary policemen go into. our schools and teach traffic safety to our children, Many officers like Constable Dave Yakichuk, Toronto township‘s traffic safety officer, attend Boy Scout, Girl Guide and Home and School asâ€" sociation meetings on their own time in the evening to teach traffic safety. Mothers are asked to discuss the work of the police witl. their children.
