Inch played guitar duets AT 8â€"0180 The water safety program in North York schools has concludâ€" ed its fifth year of operation in which 3,714 grade 5 pupils parâ€" ticipated, members of 155 classes from the 73 public schools. One thousand one hundred and fiftyâ€" two swim lessons were scheduled at seven North York pools. These lessons were given at Downsview and Avenue Road R.C.A.F., the North York Municipal, Bathurst Heights C.I, Downsview C.L, Don Mills C.I. and York Mills C.I. pools. Each pupil received eight lessons. This program was made posâ€" sible by the coâ€"operation of the North York branch of the Red Cross, the North York branches of the Y.M.C.A., the North York parks and recreational departâ€" ment and the commanding officer of the Downsview and Avenue Road R.C.A.F. stations with the North York board of education. For teaching purposes the classes were divided into two groups. One group was for nonâ€" swimmers and one for those able to swim 50 feet at the time of the first lesson. Each group reâ€" ceived instruction from a qualiâ€" fied Red Cross instructor. Those placed in the swimâ€" mer class were provided with an opportunity to improve already existing skills and to acquire lifeâ€" saving techniques and â€" water safety knowledge. At the conclusion of a session each pupil received a card inâ€" dicating personal achievement. Other cards or pamphlets_ that stressed water safety knowledge, habits and techniques were also presented. Purpose of the program has been to assist pupils to become water safety conscious, to acâ€" quire water safety skills and to erjoy experiences in, on or near the water with safety and confiâ€" dence.
