Yet Gary Archer got around to fin&ng out how much grace he could show under pressure just a few weeks ago ; on the day they told him that the lump on his thigh had proved to be a cancerous tumor. So, now he knows. He has the pressure*â€" if ever any man had it, at 21 or any other age. He"is all set up for the philosopher‘s measuring stick: how is he going to stand to it? _ Last weekâ€"end, Gary Archer was interviewed by Lou Cauz, a Globe and Mail reporter. Mr. Cauz asked Gary Archer how he felt about it all. "I‘m not going to worry about it," Archer said. "I‘m just going to take it the way it breaks, a day at a time." Are there any more questions about courage in adversity, grace under pressure? Ask any man who ever got a kick in the teeth from fateâ€"you won‘t have any trouble finding men to question on this scoreâ€"and you‘ll learn that the real calamity is when a man can‘t earn the "old iron" at the regular rates and the usual times any more. You drop out of the fiscal system very fast when something like cancerâ€"even cureable cancerâ€" hits you. You stop being a provider, either for yourâ€" self or for those who count on you for the old proâ€" visions. C ° 'mwy In all his 21 years, Gary Archer néver TT ts fought any bulls ; at least & there is no record of any “ s such activity in his brief e â€"â€" biography up to now. Gary Archer Mind you, as. a hockey player he has experienced some of the calaâ€" mities which beset both beast and matador in the bull ring. Like the bull, he has been speared and checked, tri}p'ped and elbowed. Like the matador, he has been horned and bumped, boarded and floored. That‘s why this newspaper has sponsored the Gary Arch Fund; so that you and you and you could pay practical tribute to a man of courage who is under pressure. Donations of any size should be addressed to this newspaperâ€"and now is as good a time as any to do just that. That‘s when a man needs a hand to go with his courage, with the grace under pressure. That‘s when he needs practical help. Added to last week‘s total of $212, the following donations have been received: The members of the Richmond Hill Zeros lacrosse team, $30; Ross Kilâ€" patric, $5; Mr. and Mrs. W. Burdekin, $2; Norm (Bun) Challenger, $5; Ted (Lefty) Hungerson, $5; Marta Kurc, $5; and the Town & Country Fruit Market, frozen foods as required. The total now reads $264 plus that food. Mr. Ernest Heming way, an American noveâ€" list,, put it another way. He coined a definition of courage which is a pretty good definition, for a man who never claimed to be a philosopherâ€"exâ€" cept about bulls and bullâ€" fighters. _ Courage _ is grace under pressure, Mr. Hemingway said, SPECIAL NOTICE TO CLIENTS AND POLICYHOLDERS Brown‘s Insurance Agency 90 PINE ST..
