Avarell‘s Athletes Almost Mar Perfect Record; Rally To Tie It almost happened. Avarell Allâ€"Stars nearly lost a game in the North York league to a deâ€" termined,, tough outfit known as Dynes Jewellers, the Richmond Hill team which threw a real scare into the Stars the last time the two met. The‘ Allâ€"Stars were, admittedâ€" ly, lucky to do no worse than tie the Dynes in a 9â€"inning game Test the trueness of your drive on a ball that hasn‘t had FREE PARKING â€" LADIES PLAYING WITH ESCORTSâ€" PLAY FREE Steeles Ave. and Highway 400 (Look For The Red Cabinâ€"Trailer In The Field) Storm Sewer Asphalt Pavements on Existing Concrete Sidewalks Concrete Curbs, Gutters, }L and Concrete and Asphalt aveâ€" ments Concrete _Curbs, . Brian Gillespie singled, Jack Morkin doubled, Jack Dunn doubledâ€"his third twoâ€"bagger of the gameâ€" to score Gillespie and Morkin. But Shirley belted a triple to drive Dumn home and then was called out trying to stretch his hit into a homer. The Allâ€"Stars came back in the bottom of the ninth to tie it up. _ Lennox â€" walked, Selvage singled; a walk to Ross Brooks lcaded the bases. Then Bill "The Bear" Kennedy poked one that never got out of the infield but was still sharp enough to score Lennox with the run that kept the Avarell gentry off the "games lost" record sheets. Ross Brooks, Charlie Lennox and Bill Kennedy each contriâ€" buted a pair of hits in the Allâ€" Stars cause, Bashing the Haberdashers In the game against Franklin Men‘s Wear at Kinsmen Park the Allâ€"Stars had to stand off a deâ€" termined late surge by the haberâ€" dashers to post a 9 to 7 win. The Allâ€"Stars punched across three runs in the‘ first inning, added two in the fourth; posted a single score in the fifth and a big, fat three in the eighth inâ€" ming to go ahead by 9 to 1. _ Although to all intents and purposes "dead," the Franklins refused to lie down. In the bottom of the eighth inning the haberâ€" dashers knocked in no less than six runs to make a fairly respectâ€" able game out of what had been a runaway. Big bats for the Allâ€"Stars were wielded by Mr. William Kennedy, who had four for five, including two doubles. (Incidentally, in his last appearance at Kinsmen Park, Mr. Kennedy struck out exactly four times.) Bren Selâ€" vage, who handled the pitching chores fer <the Allâ€"Stars, had himself three hits, two of which were triples. Mr. Gordon Yewman collected a pair of bingles. Smashers for the haberdashers were Ray Patton and Ray Thomas, each of whom had homâ€" ers,, and Bill Knapp, who had a very solid twoâ€"bagger in the eightâ€"inning uprising by the Franklins. 4 Ireland Tops Hockey Pals At Golf : Bill Ireland led all the rest all the way in the first annual golf tournament held by the Weston Minor Hockey League. The show us held last Saturday at the Woodbridge Golf Club. With an even 80 score Bill Irgland beat our Gord Newbold by two strokes to take the chamâ€" pionship honors. Jack McKown and Chuck Clarke battled each other all, the way to the 18th green before settling for 85‘s and a tie for third place. Roy Dancey and Barry Hall were in trouble several times but managed to turn in respectable scores of 86 and 87 respectively to account for fourth and fifth spots on the standings. Norm Hannen‘s 92 lifted him to the sixth slot, with Bill Pope close behind with 93 and Les Hughes with the same total. Alf Hall posted a 95 and Ernie Leistner 98. Frank Hall carded exactly 99 shots. Over the 100 markâ€"and chock full of alibisâ€"were Barry Mcâ€" Kenzie, Art Turner, Bud Jennett, Chris Clarke, Perey Harmen, Norm McChesney, Stan Osborne, Sonny Osborne and Bob Bradâ€" stock. The rest of the field was strung out with scores ranging between 100 and the honest reâ€" portas of Ron Forbes, 126, and Ron Jenner at 154. Tournament director Barney Arnott started the players off sharply at 10.30 a.m. After turnâ€" ing in a fair card of his ownâ€" 112â€"he went on to take care of the distribution of prizes to a slightly weary but highly enâ€" thusiastic group of "golfers?" On Wednesday, July 27th, at 7 p.m. at Lone Pine Park, Woodbridge, there is to be a ball game between Mr. Kenneth Avarell‘s Mighty Aggregation of Allâ€"Stars and the Woodbridge softball nine. The contest, sponsored by the Woodbridge players, is for the GARY ARCHER FUND. Admission prices have been scaled down to 15 cents and 35 cents. All the proceeds will go to the FUND. Putting it all together, what with the cash total of $264 and a locker full of frozen food as of last week, the GARY ARCHER FUND adds up to exactly $334 plus the edibles. _ ___ _ â€" â€" So much for the FUNDâ€"now, speaking of games, and, more precisely, of a game. Most recent additions to the roster of donors to the GARY ARCHER FUND are the following: Tom But don‘t let that stop you from sending along your donation to THE TIMES AND GUIDE in Wesâ€" ton or THE WOODBRIDGE NEWS in Woodbridge. GAME LAWS A query from Ralph Libby, of Downsview, about the meaning of a rather baffling summary of certain provisions of the Ontario Game and Fisheries Act spurred an inquiry to the provincial department of lands and forests and an interesting explanation of the intent of one section of the Act. Now, to get back to speaking about the FUND. There seems to be some confusion about the project ; some vague idea that its purpose is to be "charitable" to Gary Archer. That idea never came from here. If the impression has got around that this is a ;charity pitch" then communcation really has broken own. What it was hoped that the fund would be was simply this: a chance for sportsmen and sportsâ€" women to give practical expression to a feeling of respect and admiration for a young man with courâ€" age. Neither the Time and Guide nor the Woodâ€" bridge News ever expected that the Fund would proâ€" duce anything like enough to keep this boy on Easy Stree_t. So, charityâ€"shmarity. It ain‘t no such thing! What interested Mr. Libby was paragraph 10 on page 18 of the booklet, "Summary Of Ontario Huntâ€" ing Regulations" issued by the department. Read fastâ€"or even slowlyâ€"the paragraph could be interâ€" preted to mean that you couldn‘t go around in huntâ€" ing country with anything bigger than a lowâ€"powered .22 calibre rifle, or a shotgun loaded with ball or shot larger than number two shot. As explained by a lands and forests department official, the regulation applies to (1) : hunting during the open season for caribou, deer or moose and (2) : carrying a bigâ€"game weapon when the resident huntâ€" ing licenceâ€"the tariff on which is $1.00â€"is strictly for small game. * Intent of the provision of the Act is to prevent wouldâ€"be hunters from wandering around caribou, deer or moose country in the open season for such game with a weapon that is more likely to annoy an animal of that size than to stop him, The Wonderful World of § P O R T S eri S P O R T S M E N ow cated C L 0 P n ind i ts e ind it So, Mr. Libby: the official advice on your quesâ€" tion is this : during the open season for big game, you will be likely to be carrying a gun big enough to handle such large characters as moose and deer.
