UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA And District Church News The 19th General Council To of the United Churech of Canada: voted in favor of the revision of the Lord‘s Day Act of Canada by the government of Canada," Dr. W. G. Berry reported to the executive meeting of the Board of Evangelism and Social Serâ€" vice at its recent meeting in Toâ€" ronto. The resolution passed by the church would like to see outâ€" moded provisions of the act changed, but requested that in any revision attention should be paid to the principle contained in the act, that only "works of necessity and mercy" should be dene on that day and that it "be freed from exploitation by comâ€" mercial interests of all kinds, whether of commercialized enâ€" tertainment, commercialized sport or Sunday business." Commenting the action of the General Council of the United Church Dr. Berry, associate secâ€" retary of the Board of Evangelism and Social Service, said that this had particular reference to the propogal to pass legislation alâ€" lowing Sunday movies and enterâ€" tainments in some cities and towns in Ontario. "The church should fight its | battle against the opening of moving picture houses on Sunday on the basis that this is another step toward a completely open Sunday," said Dr. Berry. "The attempt to get the church to fight a vanguard action on each little piece of legislation that is introduced piecemeal for the purâ€" pose of nibbling *away at the Lord‘s Day Act is simply a devise of those who want to use Sunday for commercial purposes," he lwent on. Dr. Berry further said. that he felt that only by asking‘ the people to vote as they would: vote for an open Sunday could the â€" struggle agaimst â€" Sunday movies be won. It was difficult," 'he said, "to oppose Sunday movies and entertainment while lthere is Sunday boxing and Sunâ€" |day stock car racing. Therefore, the only possible way to deal with this matter was to point out that a line must be drawn someâ€" where and that this is the place for it." He did not think there was any serious demand in Toâ€" 1ronto for Sunday movies. The 1ma\in pressure for this new deâ€" parture from the observance of TIf he‘s a normal child, over the age of twelve, he can probably read these words quickly, easily. But she keeps trying â€"and one day, soon, she will be able to spell her own name â€"Jâ€"Eâ€"Nâ€"Nâ€"Y. Jenny is luckier than some retarded children. She is one of the ones, who through patient understanding and specialized training are being coaxed out of their shadow of darkness. She is one of the 25 out of 30 retarded youngsters who can be taught at least marginal self support. Not all of them get the chance. Today in Canada, there is a retarded chjld born every 25 minutes. Mental retardation is the greatest single child cripplerâ€"10 times that of polio at its heightâ€"15 times that of blindness. j ‘There is an area where the retarded child is probably more advanced than others.
