December 21, 1961 The Weston Times Advertiser How much more wonderful life is when we are willing to admit our own lack of goodness and to accept the gift of His goodness. This is the place where God meets and blesses us; life takes on new meaning, boredom flees and we learn for the first time what the joy of the Lord means. Let us at this Christmas time become acquainted with the great Giver. Let us stretch forth empty hands to receive His Gift and we will discover the true meaning of Christmas. CHURCH OF ST. STEPHEN ANGLICAN Paul, the mighty apostle, after he had won many people to the Lord revealed the springboard of his strength when he said, "I know that in my flesh dwelleth no good thing." Yes, before we can be filled with His rightness, we must first empty our minds of any ideas we may have about our own inherent goodâ€" ness because the word of God says that we have none. Then when we are willing to stretch out empty hands He reaches down and fills them with the gift of His Son, who is our righteousness. A hymn writer says: Every virtue 1 possess, And every victory won, And every thought of holiness Are His alone. 10.00 AM.â€"DECEMBER 26â€"8T. STEPHEN‘3 DaY Gift giving was the thought uppermost in the mind oï¬ God that Christmas long ago, when He gave the most costly, precious gift of all, His ‘only Son. But before we can receive a gift we must first stretch forth empty hands to receive it. God offers to us the gift of Jesus, but our hands are too full to receive Him, too full of our own so called goodness. Have you noticed people standing in a store with a concerned expression upon their faces, pondering the question, what shall ! ‘ uy "for the man on your list who has everything?‘ Yes, there are times when we are found giving gifts when actually there is no toom for them, but because of tradition we continue to give. Christmas is here once again â€" children starry eyed with anticipation, families qathered together, trees gay with festive dress and everyone busy with gift giving. While study and research are essential too often they lead to the temptation of inâ€" tellectualizing to the point of sacrificing faith. The fact reâ€" mains that the gospels were the works of men who lived with Jesus in person or by associates of those men. So absolute was the faith of the apostles in what they taught that many of them died as martyrs rather than recant any doctrine. Upon this sort of faith the Christian Church was founded. That the apostles taught that Christ was born of a virgin is all we need to acâ€" cept this Christmas miracle. Medical science may not be able to accept what is so unâ€" realistic, but it cannot disâ€" prove it. Science has not atâ€" tained the heights of spiritual science for no human being can create or even define "life." The Creator of Life alone has power to determine One of the fallacies of our time is the attempt of modern man to describe the infinite "things of the spirit" in terms of his finite thinking. It has become more desirable to many to be classed as "an intellectual" than as a "man of faith." Unless we can exâ€" plain beliefs according . to modern thought they are often discredited. As a result spiritual blindness is increasâ€" ing. Analytical study and reâ€" search has thrown new light on the interpretation _ of biblical truths and events which has been a good thing. Unfortunately it has led many too far down the path of liberalism and they have subâ€" stituted a question mark in the minds of youth instead of a sound faith to live by. This has sometimes led into agâ€" nosticism those who lacked sufficient early training. Weston Presbyterian Church self to the needs of others. We still have some of the revelry There is something in Christmas music that stirs up deep feelings and fine genâ€" erous impulses more than any other. While we thrill to its message through church orâ€" gan, choir or carillon some are apt to shudder when they hear it in a noisy store. But have you ever seen a shabby old man standing outside a downtown store with a farâ€" away look in his face and tears in his eyes? The music he hears may be raucous as its shrill notes rise above the din of the crowds all around, but it stirs up memories of someâ€" thing beautiful that was once in the old man‘s heart. This is one of the miracles of Christâ€" mas today. The birth of kings has been heralded with booming canâ€" nons and other celebrations. The unrecorded birth of Jesus was beralded with heavenly music and to this day is worâ€" shipped through the most exâ€" quisite soulâ€"stirring music the world has ever known. The shepherds were attunded to the angel choir by the power of the Holy Spirit. The heavenâ€" ly song is still circling the world after nearly two thousâ€" and years. On Christmas morning the bells will ring out joyously from steeples all around the world and the song of the angels will again resound to every corner of the earth. The greatest miracle of all time will be wrought when all men, like the shepherds of old, will be attuned to its message and will join the chorus, "Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, goodwill to men." Then and then only will we have world peace. Sir Can snyone name even one human being in the history of the world whose birthday has been celebrated for nearly two thousand years by everâ€" increasing â€" numbers, about whom so much magnificient music has been composed, so many books written and who has been the theme for so many paintings? Has any hisâ€" torical figure had so much impact for good in the world as Jesus! Has anyone ever breathed so much love on mankind? Can such a One be other than divine? Christmas is also a happy celebration for nonâ€"Christians for the spirit of joy is in the air and all come under its spell. They share in the happiâ€" ness that is contributed by many, besutiful customs and traditions that have come from many lands, for Christâ€" mas has become a great naâ€" tional heliday as well as a veligious festival. I do not think civil defence is possible, but I am certainly willing to be shown. If it is, let us have a programme for all the people of Ontario, not just for the wealthy people who can afford to build a shelter and ignore the poor people. Let us look after the school children, the people in offices, the people in apartment buildâ€" ings, people in hospitals. Let us all do these things and let us do it as a part of a Government programme. Let us stop the hysteria that the present government action is producing â€" let us build up the morale of the people of the province, rather than tear it down."
