How to win friends and inâ€" fluence people? We‘re not makâ€" ing much headway in that deâ€" partment after las. week. Just to think, we watched little Dianne Hodgson peddling down the street (on the holiday Monâ€" day) her tricycle gaily decoratâ€" ed, almost as pretty as herself, with Mum and Dad in tow. She was hurrying to enter the, Deâ€" corated Wheel Contest. Yes, Dianne was one of the winners and the proud owner of a silâ€" ver dollar. Well, if that wasn‘t enonl'.h‘ we then proceeded to mention all the talented mothers who participated at a Fashion Show except Mrs. K. W. Hodgson. Oh dear‘! We hang our head in shame. At least we cleared up one mystery through all this sloppy reporting. The highlight of the show, a mother, daughâ€" ter and walking doll in blue linen dresses was â€" you‘ve guessed it, none other than Mrs. Hodgson _ and her daughter Dianne. So, with pencil sharâ€" pened, a fresh pad of paper, we‘ll resolve to pull up our socks and do a better job of reportâ€" ing from now on. Genltemen! On a picnie we will go, for it‘s summer time you know ... brownies from the 255th and 382nd packs went by chartered bus to Boyd Park on Saturday, May 26. What a beautiful day for a picnic and those pesky mosquitoes are not around in full force yet to spoil a day outâ€" doors. A naturalist took the girls on a one hour excursion. through the Nature Trail, show: ing them earth samples, birds nests, different types of trees, just about everything that reâ€" sults in the wonders of Mother Nature. Back at the range (charcoal fire) Brown Owl Miss Newberry had the pot of water boiling ready to receive the weiners. Hot dogs and all the fixin‘s were on the menu, with milk and ice cream as second course, for the hungry packs off the trail. Brown Owl Mrs. Joyce Hewitt and Lt. Beverley Hill joined with Miss Newâ€" berry in saying "The brownies were very well behaved and we mt Poyst year poos= were very proud of them". Dollar ‘Thursday evening before 100 people assembled at the Woodâ€" bridge Arena for a four party political debate sponsored by the Woodbridge Board of Trade, Jim Walker, Liberal Candidate for York Centre spoke about the ‘financial crisis which Canâ€" ada is facing. He said â€" "On June 18th Canadians are going to the Polls determined to end the crisis of cash and confidenâ€" ce, of 483,000 unemployed, of $3 billion new debt, of a 92%c Canadian dollar, of dwindling international trade, (from 3rd to 8th trading nation in the world in six years). These are the cold, hard, shameful facts that will send us to the Polls. Enough is enough. The Tories have had their chance. Just four weeks ago Finance Minister Fleming, under the strongest of pressure from the International Monetary Fund in Washington, pulled the rug from under the Canadian dolâ€" lar. Already, the Canadian conâ€" sumer is feeling the pinch. And, it is those who can least afford it who suffer most. Citrus fruits have gone up in price, and so have some imported vegetables. Cotton goods and automobile parts made in the United States are going up. The International Air Transport Association tells us that all major airlines linkâ€" ing Canada to overseas countries have demanded an eight per cent fare increase on their inâ€" ternational _ routes _ effective June 1st. Eric Kierans, Presiâ€" dent of the Montreal and Canâ€" adian stock exchanges, has said "Canada has now been placed under the financial dictation of the United States". Pointing out that Canada may well be placed in the position of havâ€" ing to borrow from the Interâ€" mnational Monetary Fund, he noted that the United States is the only nation now putting money into the Fund. He said the Americans would thus have the right to tell us how to spend our money because in his words, "when you borrow from a bank, your banker advises you how to run your business." When Mr. Fleming and Mr. Diefenbaker say that the peggâ€" ed dollar will result in a draâ€" matic surge in our export trade, and that this in turn will lead to increased job opportunities, they are not telling us the full story. They don‘t say, for inâ€" stance, that much of our inâ€" dustry depends on imported component parts, and that the Don‘t Forget â€" Take a Hobby to the Cottage Hobbies stop boredom on rainy days, and evenings.
