Not being as verâ€" | R Veteran woodsmen have many interesting stories to tell about the beaver. An "oldâ€"timer" told me this interesting one about a family of young beavers who were trying to build a dam in fast running water. Before they got it finished. the pressure of the water was too much for it and the results of their efforts went floating down stream. A game warden once told me that a certain beaver dam had been dynamited and blown up four times in the same year, and still these hard working animals kept building it up again Someâ€" thing had to be done about them because their dam was backing a stream up over a main road Finally special traps were set and the whole family was caught alive, and unhurt, and transporâ€" ted to another part of the counâ€" try. â€" Often I have sat on the bank of a lake or pond and watched beavers at work. They are probâ€" ably the busiest animals in the country. You know the old sayâ€" ing.â€" "busy as .â€"â€"â€". ." We were surprised to see how tame they were as we watched them come to the surface practiâ€" cally beneath our feet. The bright sunlight outside the buildâ€" ing gave the effect of submerged lights in a swimming pool. Even when under water, the beavers could be seen very clearly. Mr. Tilley, owner of the isâ€" land, said they were raising two kits, or "kittens", as the young are usually called. The water at one end was loaded with tree branches. The beavers‘ food conâ€" sists mainly of the bark of such trees as alder. poplar, birch, maple and willow. During a recent visit to an is land in Lake Nipissing, a group of us had the pleasure of watchâ€" ing a couple of beavers swim around inside the boat house. THE TIMES ADVERTISER â€" Serving Weston, Rexdale, Thistletown The Thrill That Comes Once in a Lifetime a weaster C_assec DIAL CH 1â€"5211 BY BEV SANDERS Thursday, October 4, | _ The season for Ruffed, Spruce | and Sharptailed Grouse, and ‘Ptarmngan. opens on September | 15th throughout northern Ontâ€" ario. In southâ€"western Ontario the season opens October 6th. Reports have it that the "parâ€" | tridge" (grouse) are more plenâ€" tiful this year than last. A comâ€" paratively dry spring gave the chicks a chance to grow up. and we should be able to flush flocks iof them this year. Needy children all over the world require medical care, food. clothing and school supâ€" plies. Members of the Canadian Junior Red Cross are helping to meet these needs through their programmes of assistance | at home and abroad. This is Junior Red Cross Week in Canada. The Junior Red Cross in this community is part of the largest youth organization in the world. In 76 countries there are more than 59+» million members. They are dedicated to the creaâ€" tion of a better understanding amongst youth throughout the world. To foster international friendâ€" ship and understanding, young Canadians in Junior Red Cross exchanged â€" paintings, â€" albums, handicrafts and tape recordings with their counterparts in 40 countries in 1961. It doesn‘t seem to matter how wet the second half of the sumâ€" mer is as long as the spring is dry. Wet weather will cause more young birds to die of pneuâ€" monia than can ever be killed by hunters. WOODLAND I TOPICS In some parts of the province, the season has already opened for hunting black bears. This is Junior Red Cross Week in Canada. Beaver dams, although often a nuisance, are sometimes a blesâ€" sing. While treking through the bush, I have been glad to find one. It was the means of getâ€" ting across a river or wide stream. On several occasions I‘ve spinâ€"cast from the middle of a dam and landed: some dandy speckled trout. HUNTING SEASON IS HERE! "If there‘s snow on the but," he said, "it‘s not inhabited by beaver." "A beaver hut has two rooms. One is mostly under watâ€" er, and the entrance is beneath the surface. The other room is the upstairs room, above the waterâ€"room. That‘s where they sleep. The heat from their bodâ€" ies melts any snow that lands on top of the hut." sed in woodlore, I shook head.
