Just when Charlie Henderson and I were sure we weren‘t goâ€" ing to see any ducks that night, two fast moving blacks, travelâ€" ling with the wind, rocketed across the water. We had been sitting, for an hour or more, beside a pond near. Bolton. A cold wind was blowing and a steady drizzling rain added to our discomfort. But we were two eager hunters who hoped to get a shot or two away. Charlie, sitting about sevâ€" enty â€"five yards from me, was so well hidden that I could hardâ€" ly see him. I managed to get away three quick shots with the 12 gauge, but only upset their flight, and they quickly flew in opposite directions. By this time it was getting too dark to see anything on the ground. We had decided to go and get a cup of coffee someâ€" where and were talking about it when a flock of twenty, or thirty, ducks appeared in the sky. They were too high for a good shot. Even if we had hit any it would be almost imposâ€" sible to find them in the darkâ€" ness. Although our little hunt was not a successful one, we enjoyed ourselves tremendously. Discomâ€" fort was forgotten in the exciteâ€" ment of seeing the geese and in getting away a few fast shots. More than likely there would have been roast duck for dinner if I had been more experienced in picking birds out of the air. Benny May, who is a member of the "Wilderness Duck Club," told me about their experience on the opening weekâ€"end. They leased a marsh near Coldwater, and are always very successful. This year they managed to bag their limit. as usual. which inâ€" cluded _ blacks, mallards, and biue â€" bills. "At one time," said Benny, "it appeared as though literally thousands of wild fowl were flying around us at the same time. They were coming at us from all directions." It‘s _ surprising _ how _ many shots dont find their mark. Some ducks seem to live a charmed life and fly merrily on when you‘re sure you‘ve hit them. The truth of the matter is that you missed them by inâ€" ches and sometimes by feet., all because you didn‘t lead them enough, More birds are missed by not leading enough than by any other cause, A shot that is aimed point blank at a duck, is a wasted shot. i The deceptive speed of a duck j is so great that you must fire | ahead of him. The duck and | your shot will meet at that point. | If they‘re going away from you, | at an angle, aim slightlv ahead | and below them. If they‘re comâ€" ing at you, on an angle, aim | slightly ahead and above them. | Practice makes perfect and, in following the above rules. it shouldn‘t take too long to be able to instinctively lead just the right amount. Charlie and I have decided to invest in a trapâ€"shooting device and practice shooting at clay "pigeons". For those gun enthusâ€" iasts who don‘t wish to kill, or who don‘t like wild game, I reâ€" commend trap or skeet shooting as real good sport.
