To make their Christmas as merry as possible, and to salvage some peace for our own Christmas, we have found that following their usual daily routine is the best way. The children are in good humour and we can all enjoy our Christmas even opening a few more gifts after dinner! One year we were so busy look. ing after two babies and dinner and company that we never had time to open all our gifts on Christmas. so we had two days of Christmas! No one really minded that, so it set the pattern for the following years, and we have found it quite successful with the preschoolers. Each year, of course, they get more into the spirit of the day, but we are convinced that the best way for all of us to enjoy it is to keep the excitement to a minimum and not let anyone get overtired. This point was brought out very clear. ly by Mr, Herh Gray. the Mrsm- her from Essex West. As he put it -- "There is no question that if workers are willing and are im terested in moving from one part of the rounlry to another in order to take up employment for which (Continued on page 9) r the family, [ETTERS "Christmas in too commercial- Ved," remarked our guest die gusledly. All of a sudden it is all over and what is it anyway?" We were seated around the dining room table enjoying each others company when our young friend made the above remark. My first impulse was to say that I loved Christmas and what would winter be without it. Coming in from the cold to the warmth of a pine scented " ing room; watching a starry eyed child as he decks the tree with glittering baubles; catch. ing the aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg as the big wooden spoon stirs the Christmas cake; all these and more awaken within me a thankfulness that I am a- live and that I am privileged to celebrate the season in tradi- tional Canadian manner. But I had to admit that what he said was true. Christmas is too commercialized. It can mean too many cards to write, too many ogitts to buy, too many rounds in crowded stores where Christmas carols are blazoned forth in an atmosphere of crash commercializm. l paused before answering and said, It is like reading a book. It is a lot more fun if you know the author." Iteottyoooooetooetrttme4 How few of us really know the One whose birthday we are celebrating.' Even the little girl who carried Him close to her heart those perplexing months before He was born did not al- ways understand, After all peo- ple will talk and the folks of Nazareth were no exception. "Mary, she who has kept the law so faithfully and been such a home loving girl! Look at her, Christian Thought hy Clolr Goody.» I wonder it Mary kept close to Joseph when the caNFlut left Nazareth to go to Bethlehem to be taxed. In all probability she would shun the comma! of the older women for she know what they were saying about her as they gathered round the well each day. And when she went into Egypt after the baby was born and did not return for many months . "Weit was not that prod of her embarrassment and shame?" will you. and only been married those few short months." I shall never cease to marvel at the humility of the Son at God. Because of the circum- stances of His birth no one need ever feel that they are outside the pale of His sympathetic un- derstanding. We hang our gifts upon a tree and tie them with a red rib- bon. God did the same for us. He hung His Son upon a tree at Calvary, but the red ribbon He used was a red ribbon ot blood that flowed down from His side atoning for the sins of the world. Christmas is too comm mercialized, but if we know Him, amidst the paganism ot modern living admist the hustle and bustle of life we can carry joy _. deep down J because ot Him.
