The Plan‘s purpose is to guide a Foster Child toward ecâ€" sequently to responsibility for his family and service to his country. Canadianâ€"help as a stepping stone to selfâ€"help is the Foster Parents‘ PJan way. A letter from Foster Parents | Plan Follows: j Yung Shik is living in abject | poverty with his parents andi brother, Yung Joon (14), in Seoul, Korea. He also has a | brother, â€" Yung Wung (18) who | is working as an errand boy | and lives elsewhere. He is bare ly able to earn his board and lodging. The child‘s parents fled from their home in Northern Korea to escape Communist persecuâ€" tion there at the end of World War II when the Russians oc cupied that zone. They settled in Seoul but had to flee to take refuge in Pusan during the Korean War. After the Armisâ€" tice, they returned to Seoul and hoped to find a better way of life. But the only work the fathâ€" er could find was that of a lab â€" orer. carrying heavy loads on his back by means of an "Aâ€" frame." Overtaxing his strength took its toll and he became ill and | finally suffered | paralysis. Now he can barely walk withâ€" out support. The mother has been trying to support the family by peddâ€" ling‘ vegetables in the streets. But finally she did not have money enough to buy the vegeâ€" tables to sell and she did launâ€" dry work and house chores for neighbours. The most she earnâ€" ed was 30c a day. They were on the verge of starvation and had to count on & charitable dole of corn <and milk porridge each day. When the plight of this family came to the attention of PLAN, aid was immediately ex: tended to Yung Shik through the goodness of aformer Foster Parent who is no longer able to heip. Your timely "adoption‘" as sures him ef the continuance of benefits so sorely needed. . "Home" is a small, dark room located on the outskirts of Seoul. The only roof they have is that made by torn canvas. There are no modetn facilities of â€" any kind in this area where life is extremely primitive. Yung Joon has completed the . sixth primary grade and the mother finds it very difficult to pay school .costs. Yung Shik is normally develâ€" oped and has a sweet disposiâ€" tion. He is well liked ‘ by his playmates.. He is cheerful ‘and bright and does well in school. He is now in the fifth grade. Your generosity, through PLAN, provides this child with a cash grant of $8:00 a month, medical care, parcels of clothing and nourishing foods and the chance to gethis education. Your kind assistance given with the warmth of your friendship will give hapâ€" piness to this boy â€" and the chance to find a better, more seâ€" cure future. A RECIPE FOR VINEGAR, published about 1860.. calls for eight gallons of rain water. three quarts of molasses and three spoons of yeast. "If in summer, place the cask in the sun," the directions read. "If in winter place it near the chimney. In 10 or 15 days add a sheet of brown paper torn in strips. wrapped in molasses. The paper will form what is called the mother or life of vinegar." (Continued from page 1) Pretzels were popular in Cenâ€" tral Europe and they‘ appeared each year on Ash Wednesday. They were sold on the street by special vendors and were often distributed to the poor. After Easter pretzels weren‘t baked again until the following Lent.
