The result of his experiâ€" ment is related in a bizarre and terrifying document entitled "Black Like Me." John Howard Griffin, a white Southerner, changed the pigâ€" Following its publication in 1961, the author and his family were hounded from the State of Texas by the soâ€"called "white civilized Christian natives" who thmgmed the entire existence of this gentle kindly man, his wife, his children and his aged parents. 9. They are now living in Mexfll co, but Mr. Griffin makes freâ€" quent pleas over radio and teleâ€" vision for understanding, toler-‘ ‘ance and decency on the part of the white man toward his fellow black man. These broadcasts are "Jammed" by the Southern State authorities to prevent any resident living in any of the Southern States from hearing him. Recent developments in the United States lend a lie to any suggestion that the appalling deâ€" gradation of the Southern Negro is at last coming to an end. Nothing could be further from the truth, mostly because the carefully nurtured attitudes of the white man there have arisen from his perverted sense of desâ€" ‘tiny which, alas, is all to preâ€" ‘valent among whites everyâ€" where. It seems incredible that anyâ€" onie should believe himself suâ€" perior because his skin be white. But then, there are those who believe themselves to be superiâ€" or to other white races simply because thay happened to be born in a country they deem superior. And there are Chrisâ€" tians who believe themselves suâ€" perior to Jews and Jews who believe themselves superior to gentiles. Indeed, there is no end to man‘s vanity arld insanity. One might expect the Negro to be devoid of these attitudes since his major quest at the moâ€" ment is one of recognition in a white man‘s world, But this apâ€" teith, Bryan; Moorse, Richard; Morrison, Barry; Muir, Gordon; Mulvenna, Thomas; â€" Nichols, Douglas; Oliva, Deanâ€" na; Ottewell, Frank; Palmer, Ted; Panter, John; Patten, Eliâ€" zabeth; Peat, Barbara; Percy, Lorraine; Perry, John: Pickard, Linda; Plunkett, Marion; Potter, John; Prince, Laurie; Pryne, Paul; Quickfall, Heather; Reeves, Frank : Relyea, Brian; Ritchie, John; Rhodes, James; Roberts, Michael; Robson, Merrilee; Rosser, Joâ€" seph; Sandham, Kenneth; Schmidt, Carol; Scott, Robert; Seedhouse, Joâ€" anne; Seifert, Linda; Selk, Peâ€" ter; Sloski, Susan Jill; Smith, Donald; Snowdon, James; Steâ€" ‘phml, Nancy ; \ Strickland, James; Sutherland, lfuT; ‘Taylor, Clifton; Taylor, Peter; Thomson, Jim; Tomlinâ€" son, Lynda; Tumber, Gary; Urâ€" quhart, Wendy; Vincent, Sandra; Walkenr June; Waiters, Teresa; W arkâ€" man, Rusty; Webb, David; Webâ€" ster, Elizabeth; Weinrich, Lanâ€" cer; Whalen, John: _ Wilkes, David; Wilkie, Gienn; (ikd *Cldn Are We Less Than Human? Indeed, the U.S. Cagital‘s school situation provides one of the most fascinating social picâ€" tures in the district for it is in such a fluid condition, and with the racial angle dominatâ€" ing. e For example, only 15 years ago white pupils were in the majority in the public schools â€" kindergarten through teachers‘ college. There were 48,000 white students, or 53 per cent of the total, as against 47,000 colored, or 47 per cent. Today, while the school popuâ€" lation is nearly twice what it was 15 years ago, the number Hed ‘THOSE WERE THE DAYS GRANDPA‘S BOY Greamra WV is mc CGeass GREESA? wWHY is water. In contrast the Neâ€" gro school population has nearly tripled â€"â€" accounting for over 112,000 out of a total of 135,000. Negroes today make up 83.4 per ‘cent of the population of the schools in the District. The startling drop in white enrollment in the schools\ has several explanations, partiâ€" cularly the movement of white‘ families to the suburbs in Maryâ€" land and Virginia, and white faâ€" milies sending their children to private schools, The influx of Negroes into the District (most coming from culturally deprivâ€" ed sections of the South) comâ€" bined with the movement of white families to the suburbs, |accounts for the fact that now ‘Negroes constitute 54 per cent of ]the District‘s population. ‘The percentage of Negroes in the public schools, however, is less the higher up one goes. One ‘exvphmï¬on is the increasing number of dropouts in the upper grades. In the elementary schools the percentage of Negroes is close to 86 per cent. In the junâ€" ior high it is about 83 per cent; Helen Hyland, Margaret Elaine Jones, Maureen Patricia Kane, Mary Claire King, Mary Louise King, Claire Marie Kinsman, Eileen Patricia Kirk, Vera Anne Krakauskas, Madeline Lowrie, Margaret Mary Moadill, Helen Marn, Laraine Moarley, Elaine Catherine McDougall, Margaret Alice Muirhead, Joâ€" anne Marie Mulhall, Carolyn Theresa Murphy, Joan Corol Newton, Irene Margaret Pawlowicz, Dora Antoinette Peliegrin, Moarie Eloine Pendlebury, Sherrilyn Pihulak, Mary Ann Podkowa, Olivia Deanna Poles, Nancyâ€"Jaye Robichaud, Concetta Sobetti, Helene Louise St. Jacques, Bernice Coatherine Stevens, Jasminka Susonj, Susamn Frances Syer, Donna Mary Szot, Elizabeth Anne Townshend, Catherine Joan Trivett, Patricia Ann Trojan, Gail Patricia Williams, Stella Joanne Wojas, and Brenda Carol Woods. But the most inâ€" teresting figures and facts availâ€" able are on the matter of Negro employees in the public schools. Out of more than 5,300 some 72 per cent are colored. The perâ€" centage is not so high among administrative help, school prinâ€" ciplas, etc., where it runs 53 per cent, but among teaching staff which accounts for most of the 5,300 employees, it runs better than the overallâ€"over 73 per cent. Negroes hold principal posts at all levels A Negro woman is principal of an allâ€"Negro high school, Cardozo. But there are only three Negro principals among the 13 city high schools. The number and percentage grows at the junior high school level where about half are Neâ€"i groes, and at the elementary] school level Negroes dominate. There are now 25 colored people }apply'mg for a teaching job in the District for every white perâ€" the one development not partiâ€" cularly anticipated in the matter of school personnel concerns the relationship of janitor to princiâ€" All this was anticipated, but 4 beanra? This has been described variously as a status situation, or a striving for status, not as between races but within the colored race. An interesting illustration is the case of the John Eaton eleâ€" mentary school in the Cleveland Park area. The janitor, a Negro by the name of Cole, was so well liked by the parents, chilâ€" dren, and principal that when he was moved as janitor to an allâ€"Negro school the neighborâ€" hood took up a purse of $500 in appreciation of his work.
