True, it would take a great many Brussels sprouts, in fact a diet ‘consisting almost enâ€" tirely of Brussels sprouts, to aflec} the thyroid gland In other words, the only human one, Clancy; a thoroughly reâ€" spectable French journalâ€"reâ€" searchers have found that cabâ€" bage in the diet may resuit in hypertrophy ot' the thyroid gland. s That goes for Brusselis sprouts, too. As one who has faithfully detested â€" Brussels sprouts since he was old enough to flip his pablum. I personally rejoice to discover that the little green horrors are not nought. I must therefore report that scientific research has proven too much cabbage in the diet can lead to goitre. According to an article in a French journal â€" no, not that This column considers it to be a solemn duty to inform the reader, and especially the young reader who has before him many years of subscribâ€" ing to the paper, of these sciâ€" entific facts that support his fancies and pull the plug on the unpleasant, SlGHé{EElN%EEZ‘ * l RoGuEs, Ts LAKE is CowsibekeDp OF TVE MoSt BEAUTIFUL RESORT 1N NORTH AMERICA. Have you heard the latest about Brussels sprouts? It is conceivable the ghoulish nature of these motorists could have been responsible for a loss of life, for in some cases seconds not hours count in the rush to hospital. A rash of accidents on Highway 27 near midâ€"day Tuesday drew curious motorists by the gcore. These people pulled their cars up on the shoulder of the road and strolled into traffic to cross the highway in order to catch a glimpse of the mishaps. Traffic slowed down to a point where it would have been impossible for an ambuâ€" lance to make headway had anyone been seriously injured. The Etobicoke Planning Board will be hearing submissions from representatives of Community Research and Development, Incorporated, of Baltimore, Maryland, reâ€" garding the rezoning of 107 acres of land at the northâ€"west corner of Highway 27 and the Queen Elizabeth Way. They will also hear arguments from nearly every merchant in the township including interâ€" ested retailers from neighbouring communâ€" ities in the Lakeshore and Toronto Townâ€" ship. _ . Members of Council who approved the tender did so in complete ignorance because prior to the byâ€"law they had not been given the entire story. Like puppets being conâ€" trolled by the Board of Control, they passed the byâ€"law. For instance Etobicoke Council did not approve a payment of over $20,000 in damâ€" ages to the sanitary sewer flood victims, because of a legal technicality. Unless the township was found liable the insurance company, Waterloo Mutual, would not pay the claims. Although Council "sympathiâ€" zed" with the victims nothing constructive was done to ease the financial burden of these citizens because admitting liability would cast bad light on certain department heads. Tendering out a certain portion of the township‘s garbage pickup was done in ignorance. Important facts and discussions with those directly involved in this contract was unintentially or purposedly overlooked by Board of Control. Commencing September 17 Etobicoke is faced with another major decision. In our. opinion the officials of Etobicok Toewnship have made a number of wrons decisions recently, Although these officials tlnolnlu:zdnu moves by stating it was for the g of the general public, we are more inclined to believe these decisions were made through fear and ignorance. Ambulances cannot fly. It is ironic that we in North America who express disgust at the "cruelty" of the Latin Americans, Arabs and Africans, just can‘t wait to reach the seene of a gory acâ€" crdent to view the carnage. We have said before and we will say it again: People without just cause for being at an accident scene should be charged if after one warning from an officer, they do not depart the scene immediately. Officials in Etobicoke Township seem to be more concerned with the legal decisions rather than just decisions. At one time or another we are all the minority and it is comforting to know that your municipal government respects the rights of the minâ€" ority. We ask that the officials of the Planning Board, Planning Department and Council make a thorough and complete investigaâ€" tion into the Sherway Project betore arrivâ€" ing at a just conclusion. This decision is so vital and important that outside pressures have already denied the merchants an opportunity to compile more facts by postponing the hearing date; and, Alex Bissett, member of the Planning Board has declared a conflict of interests although his firm is not directly connected with any of the merchants. Yet Planning Board is considering the proposition. It is indeed strange to us how thigPlanning Board can be so rigid as to véfo the construction of prestige office buildings because they do not conform to the "Official Plan" by half an acre, yet conâ€" duct a full scale hearing on a project which does not conform by 107 acres! We wonder if the officials of Etobicoke are ever going to make the right decision. Many projects in the township have taken two years to gain approval because the offiâ€" cials wanted to make a thorough investiâ€" eation. This American firm wishes to build & multiâ€"million dollar commercial .complex on the land. The merchants oppose this proposition because: 1. It is industrial land never intended for commercial use ; 2, Their livelyhoods hinge on the final decision. Etobicoke‘s official plan, the Traffic Coâ€" ordinator and the Township Engineer, just to name a few, cite reasons why the project, known as the Sherway Project, should not go in igh n does ve had et off The chairman of Metro welfare and housing comâ€" mittee took time out last week to grumble about Etobiâ€" coke holding up the Thistletown housing project for low income famulies Etobicoke just wants a reasonable deal from the ‘tederal énd provincial government on land needed by Etobicoke tor municipal purposes The opcrating loss of the TTC in the first seven months of 1963 now stands at $1,726,408 more than triple the amount for the same period in 1962. It will get larger with the introduction of the new suburban service. Residents of the Lokeshore and Etobicoke will be going to the polis on Sept. 25th for the third time in nine months. First it was a December 1962 municipal elecâ€" tion, than an April 8 Federal election and now a provinâ€" cial election. Fortunately the next municipal election is 15 months away. Of course the residents of Weston may hove to go to the polls in the meantime to vote on a liquor question. Metro has 14 municipal governments in a 240â€"square mile area that includes more than 108 elected represenâ€" tatives, 94 civic committees and 124 civic departments This doesn‘t include the 90 boards and commussions in the Metro area with certain civic government functions Strangely enough the total annual remuneration paird to members of these civic committees and boards is less than $500,000 combined Did you know that there is almost as much fluorine inâ€"a cup of tea as there will be when Metro fluoridates the water supply on a full scale basis. Premier Robarts had also written to Mr. Pearson offering coâ€"operaâ€" tion in getting the Federal pan off the ground but then putting in so many qualificaâ€" tions as to make his offer meaningless. In the light of this, Miss Laamrsh had good reason for doubt that her pension scheme would ever see the light of day. But. more recently durâ€" ing a_ visit to the Canadian National Exhibition she was taking quite a different tone. One way or another they are mereâ€" ly another burden on the taxâ€" pavers of Canada as workers and consumers, merely anâ€" other transfer payment to reâ€" distribute the wealth This is no reason in itsell to condemn the pension plan and. it can be taken for grantâ€" ed that Premier Robarts, with an election on his hands. will not do so out of hand. But w hen Mr. Diefenbaker deâ€" clared that the Liberals could not put their Pension plan into effect without increasing taxation by 40 to 50 per cent he deserved better than the jeers he got from his opponâ€" ents. Miss Lamarsh quoted him jubilantly when she pre sented the plan to the House of Commons and announcea a contribution of two per cent But what does that mean? For the first ten years ‘of the plan the Government wil) take out of the national avetrâ€" age earnings of $4,000 an adâ€" ditional $80. Assuming the average earner has a wife but no children he will pay an adaitional income tax of 26 per cent Canada is considering givâ€" ing de facto recognition to the Communist Government . of China, It is a little belated as we have signed a â€" second wheat deal w ith a Governâ€" ment that doesn‘t exist, Contributions to the n e w Canada Pension plan are no less a tax..It will be paid by every employed person in Caâ€" nada and by his employer who It is significant that the present Finance Minister. Someone thought up the idea of increasing .sales tax. corporation tax and personal income tax by two per cent and establishing with these revenues an old age security fund out of which the old age pension would be paid. Maxiâ€" mum additional income tax was $60. It created the paradox of the decade. In the succeeding budget Finance Minister Abâ€" bott announced a reduction in income taxes and for a night of glory got the credit. But the next morning the people of Canada awoke to the fact that they were paying higher taxes, Nor, was there ever an old age security fund. It was merely a bookkeeping item. Earmarked taxes were taken into the consolidated revenue fund and pensions paid from it. If pensions exceeded the amount of earmarked taxes the difference was called a loan from the Treasury but, a !van that was never repaid Today earmarked taxes have been increased to three pe: cent and the maximum payâ€" ment to $90. erit CAPITAL HILL CAPSULE didn‘t do anythi forgotten.
