Operation Crosswords Africa, Bob said, was founded as a sumâ€" mertime â€" student project five years ago by Dr. James Robinâ€" son, a Negro minister in New York City. "The Crossroaders don‘t go into any African country unless inâ€" vited to do so by its government or private enterprise within the country. â€" Churches, individuals and foundations provide the money for this work," said Bob. "The United Church of Canada donates something like $40,000 vear and because of this donaâ€" tion the 25 Canadian students in Africa this summer paid only $300 each toward the expense of their trip. The 260 American students spent $900 each â€" and most of them were helped out by individuals and groups interâ€" ested in what they were doing." The students work hard in Africa â€" at manual labor. The group Bob was in was sent to a backward, grassland area in Tanâ€" ganyika to build a community centre. Springing up around the country, these centres are built around a core of two classrooms and a dormitory. .LB. 39' Just back from a summer spent in Tanganyika, East Africa is 19â€" yearâ€"old Robert (Bob) Malcolmâ€" son of Ravensbourne Crescent, a thirdâ€"yearâ€"history student at the University of Toronto, The Community Development Department of Tanganyika‘s govâ€" ernment provided the students with some helpersâ€"20 prisoners. Whether or not they will be open to new ideas seemed questionable to the students even though classes at the community centre will be staffed by Tanganyikan governâ€" ment appointees, the African leaders to their peoâ€" ple," said Bob, "but it‘s clear that there is no tradition of self help among African men. ‘We got a little help with the construction from the ‘villagers (particularly after they realized we were not paid by a foreign government to be there and we were living at close to their standards.) Progressiveness and â€" getâ€"upâ€" andâ€"go in Africa appeared to be related to diet and the general state of a tribe‘s health, Bob thought. Where he was staying, the people existed on a meagre diet of vegetables and their enâ€" ergy was limited.
