This writer was fortunate enough to be in Ottawa, Montreal and other smaller towns during R e m e mâ€" brance weekâ€"end. It was heart warming indeed to see most school age youngsters wearing a poppy and inâ€" teresting to observe the familiar arrangements for cenâ€" otaph ceremonies in the small municipalities. These are smaller versions of the large scale ceremony conâ€" ducted at the National War Memorial in Confederaâ€" tion square Ottawa, honoured by the presence of the Governor General of Canada and Grand Patron of the Royal Canadian Legion. One hears xf the presence of speakers addressing class rooms in the rural schools as well as assembltes in the larger schools with a message of Remembrance. This community was the more signifâ€" icant for what has been one of the most stirring and provocative addresses ever given before a group of high school students. I refer to the address "The Sigâ€" nificance of Remembrance Day" delivered to the Stuâ€" dent Body of Weston Collegiate & Vocational School by Miss Dora Wattie a teacher on the faculty, on Friâ€" day November 8 at the morning general assembly. This was printed in it‘s entirety in the November 16 issue of the Advertiser, I was so impressed with the conâ€" tent that a copy has been forwarded to the Editor of the Legionary, our National publication. I sincerely ;:otpe this stirring message may gain even wider circuâ€" ation. Former Branch Padre the Reverend R.C. Creelâ€" man was guest speaker at the Anniversary dinner of the Weston Presbyterian Church this past week. A forâ€" mer minister of the church, Reverend Creelman is now minister of the Ottawa Westminster Presbyterian church in Westboro district. He has preserved his conâ€" tinuity of membership in the Legion and it‘s work serâ€" ving as Padre in the Nepean branch in suburban Otâ€" tawa. There was a mild amount of panic prevalent in the area most of last week because the sign cnnounâ€"ing the plaza at Jane and _ Sheppord â€" was â€" removed. Most people were under the imnresâ€"ion that this meant the nlans to bwild a plaza were disâ€" continued. This is not so. The plaza will go up as plann~d but the sizn will not be up due to a minor byâ€"law â€" infring>ment preventing it, However I have additional news in that plans are also going ahead for another strin of stores on the south east corner as well. These will be up at a later date than the Wysliffe plaza but both comâ€" mercial areas will be up and onerating by this time next year if not bofore then. Construction is probably at a standstill for the winter so let‘s hone for an early spring when both tuilders will get started on our much â€" needed commercial area. Members of Rangers branch are reminded that the annual Christmas party for children twelve years of age and under will take place at the Club on Sunâ€" day afternoon December 15. Two sittings are necesâ€" sary, surnames starting with A to J at 1:30 p.m. and K toZ at 3:30 p.m. Register the children EARLY. On Friday. November 15th the Downsview Arena was officially; opened. Details of the opening: are reported elsewhere in this paper but I would like to reâ€" mind the residents of the area} that the iceâ€"rink is available| for pleasureâ€"skating for preâ€"} schoolers â€" school â€"age children,‘ teens and adults at convenient‘ times throughout the week and the cost is very reasonable. There is a wellâ€"run snack bar; at the Arena plus facilities for meetings étc. Many of the resâ€" idents of Oakdale Heights will find a familiar face at the snack bar. I am of course referring to Eve Risdon of Giltspur Drive Mrs. Risdon has been there since the Arena opened official Iv last year so don‘t forget to drop in to say hello to her when vou are there. On Saturday, November 16th the Belmar Park Ratepayers Asâ€" sociation held their _ Annual Dance which was as usual a big success. Many of the regulars were there as well as a few new faces but all in all a good time was had by everyone. I can‘t help but mention that it is amazing to see how wellâ€"run these dances are. The music is go od. the comnany congenial and of course the food is exâ€" cellent. Also present were Coun: cillor John Booth and his wife (‘oming this Saturday is of course the Glenfield Acres Rateâ€" payers Dance at the Janeway This is just a remindér to those who have overlooked the date Due to a misunderstanding last week I thanked Raemar Tuner for the use of the P.A. system which they offered the Eight NCack Hon I did not realizs Oakdale Heights & Beliuar Park he P A. evstom, sperker The Legion Scene to the Eight O‘Clock Hop to keep for ; oll time, and so my humble | apologies and a great big ‘thank | |you‘ goes out to Mr. Cee Murton |for his kind donation. As many of my readers probâ€" ably noticed the news of the Downsview Dart Club has reachâ€" |ed the Sports Page of this newsâ€" |paper. There is a rumour that the English team with whom |the Club was playing will also ‘have the results printed in a ‘local paper for the benefit of |our members who might wish to ‘elip items for a scrapbook.
