The mornâ€" ing and evening services were conductâ€" ed by Rev, Mr. Wilkinson, of Hanover, whose discourses were a'gpreciuted by large congregations. In jhe eyening he expounded the doctrine of the *"Unity of the Church" and its members l:ilunfi his text from Eph. 4: 4â€"6. The chure of Christ consisted of all quickened inâ€" dividuals, of one faith, though not necessarily of one belief, haying one aim, but accomplishiag i. by varying means. Rev. Mr. Farqubarson spoke in the afternoon to a large cougregation, and his first effort in the pulpit of a sister congregation is yery highly appreciated. Moxpay EvyEexixc. Again the church was crowded to listen chiefly to an imported platform star in the person of Mrs. Scott Raff, of Owen Sound, who is, by the way, a relative of Mr. 8. Scoit of town. He first cailed upon Mr. Telford to lead in the National Anthem, a proceâ€" dure, common of late to make sure that in these stirring times, it is not halfâ€" heartedly sung by a retiring audience as is frequently the case. The songâ€"prayer was very bheartily joined in. Rev, Sharp of the Varney Circuit then led in prayer, after which Miss Meredith gave a fine solo, and later the Misses Meredith gave a duett which was a sweet ‘good night‘ song rendered with finely bilended voices in good taste. Nr. Telford gave the fine martial song "The Death of Nelson." and later "where are the Boys of the old Brigade" and we think rarely if ever did we hear him in better voice, or enter into the effort with so much spirit and fine exâ€" pression. Mr. J. A. Hunter‘s "Jerusaâ€" lem" piecewith its fine *Hosanna‘ refrain was a popular number, and there was 1+ feeling of disappointment that he dia not appear again. Mrs. L. Morlock sang *"When the Heart was young" and another piece, and in both her voice of fine compass and purity showed to good advantage, and the pleasure and the pathos of the contrasted verses of the former piece was well brought out. Dr. Jamieson, M. P. P. was placed in the chair, and after congratulating the meinbership on the many evidences of their progress, thanked them for again bonoring him with the position and placing in his hand such a tine progrium, Rev, Mr. Farquharson in a few well chosen words added his good wishes ard gave congratulations, and Rev. Mr. Sharp also expressed his pleasure at the fine fraternal feeling displayed by other congregations in being present in such numbers. Over $300 had been taken in cash, and when all was in over $100 would be secured as their offering to the 20th Century fuad. Miss I.au",:e in her usual able manner accomp®nied the musical numbers, A number of youngepeop‘e from our burg attended the anniversary service in the Durham Methodist Church last Sunday night. Mr. Chas. Gadd has rented Mr. Jno. MeCalmon‘s cornerlot for another vear. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. MeCalmon jr. ot Dornoch visited at the parental home on Sunday last. Mr. Adam Little had a couple of team drawing straw on Tuesday last. Mr. James Hay sr. and Mr. Chas. Gadd visited at Mr. Wmt Smiths on Sunday last. Sam. Caldwell and Jno. Carson came home lately from the North W est. Miss Louise Gadd was the guest of Miss Ellen Gadd for a few days this week. Mrs. J. Carson is vi«‘‘ing Mrs. Wm. Caldwell for a coupie of days this week. * Mr. Leeson and Miss Millie are gone for a few week‘s holiday visiting relaâ€" tives near Ingersoll. Mrs. D. Allen was visiting at Mr. T. Gadd‘s one day last week. Mr. Nelson Eden purchased another driver from Mr, J. Aldred on Saturâ€" day last. Miss Pearlie Murdock was visiting at Mr. Jehn Bogles one day last week, There is some talk of the cement works going to be in our village. We might find ourselves living in a town some day. METHODIST ~ANNINERSARY. MOST SUCCESSFUL YET HELD VARNEY. The members of the Presbyterian congregation at Chatsworth are rejoicâ€" ing, and well they may. At the beginâ€" ing of last week by a long pull and a strong pull, and a pull tegether they succeeded in completely wiping out a debt of nearly $1300, the result is almost a surprise to themselyes and like the contributors to the temple of old. *"The people rejoiced that they were able to give willingly." Rev. Mr. Lie‘s Congregation Honors se Ond Its Postor. _ When Rey. Mr. Little was inducted on Nov. 2. 1898. there was a debt of $1382. A teameeting at new years reâ€" duced this by $100 and interest. Mr. Little is no believer in the process of eating a church out of debt and intimâ€" ated then his hope that they would require no more paid tea meet:ngs, and yet thought it desirable they enter the 20th century free from debt. The wise ones shook their heads and thought this was impossible. In August Mr. Little preached on *"*Giving" to the Lord as a duty as incumbent as praying and on Monday morning by leave of his session started to canyass. asking gifts to the Lord for the purpose of paying off the debt. to be parid on or beâ€" fore Nov, 5th the anniversary of his inâ€" duction. On Saturday night his list showed promises of $1472,. the debt heâ€" ing $1276. On the evening of the 5th November at their anniversary service, $1451 of this $1472 promised had been paid in, and on Monday morning $8 more came in and the remaining $13 was expected within the week. When the fact that the debt had been more than met was wnnounced the congregation joined heartily in "Praise God from whom all blessings flow," while the energetic pastor with gratiâ€" tude in hi. heart to God and his people admonished them "not unto us, but unâ€" to Thy name be the glory." Mr. Little has given and has met with great encouragement in his new sphere, and in this special work did not meet with a single frown or cross word. Mr, Donald Graham, lots 23 & 23, con 3, N. D. R.
