The following are the aver sults of the field tests for si with both the Turkey Red a Dawson‘s Go‘:den Chaff: at the same time furnrish that quality of graiun for which there is the greatâ€" est demand. A careful study of the results of our experiments with winâ€" ter wheat will greatly aid in this seâ€" lection. Work is now boing done in the Exporimental Department with the object of improviag the best varâ€" leties of winter wheat by means of careful selection and by cross _ ferâ€" tiilzation." The college reports are printed by the Ontario Department of Agriculture, Toronto, Ont., and ars distributed from there to all who apply for them, In th» winter of 18983 9, from 85 to 90 per cent. of both the Dawson‘s golden chaff and the turkey red varietios were winter killed. Both varieties, however, came through the following winter in good condition. a ) In 1893 the Ontario Agricultural , | College imported eleven varieties â€" of winter wheat from Kansas, four from Indiana, one from lowa, six from § Ohio, etc. The Turkish, or Turkey red, regardiog which we are hearing * so much at tho present time, â€" was â€"] one of the varieties imported â€" that ; | year, and has therefore been grown p alt the college in each of the past seven years. We again imported fresh ‘| seed of the turkey red variety in 1896, | and sowed both the Canadian and the | western grown seed in the autumn | of that year. The results from the | two crops in 18097 were slightly in | favor of the Canadian grown seed, but . were almost identical, there being a ] différence of less than one peck â€" in the yield of grain per acre. ‘The annual report of the Ontario Agricultural College for 1898 gives the average of five years‘ results of | tests with each of fortyâ€"eight varâ€" letios in strength of straw, weight of grain per measured bushel, _ and yield of grain per acre. It also gives the comparative hardness of the grain of each varioty as determined with an apparatus similar to the one invented by Prof. N. A. Cobb, of Ausâ€" tralia. The tabulated results on page 134 are followed by a report of about 1,000 words, spocially dealing with the relative hardness â€" of the grain of the varisties there given. inâ€" cluding the turkey red, the Dawson‘s go!lden chaff, and the early red clawâ€" son. Rather than recommend any one Yariety of wirter wheat for Ontario, the college publishes from time to time the exact results of practical experiments, and then allows â€" those Interested to make their own selecâ€" tion. The report closes with the folâ€" lowing remarks: "The varieties which ‘ the farmers are likely to grow â€" are those which they can usually harvest | / with the least amount of labor, and | that will produce the greatest | fiâ€" | | nancial returns for their time and labor in growing the crop. For instance, _ the weight per measured bushel of the Turkey red was 64.5 lbs. in 1898, and 55.1 lbs. in 1897, and that _ of the Dawson‘s Golden Chaff was 61.6 Ibs. in 1898 and 353.5 lbs. in 1897. It will be remembere® that in 1897 there was an exceptionally wet harâ€" vest, and that a large amount of wheat â€" throughout _ Ontario was sprouted that year. I understand that there was m large export trade from Ontario of flour made from the wheat grown in 1897, and _ this might have something to do with the reputation of our flour in the foreign market. Within the past ten years, a good many varieties of winter wheat have been distributed to farmers throughâ€" out ‘Ontario, who applied for them fFor testing upon their own farms. Great care has been taken in the selection of the varieties for disâ€" tribution _ and some kinds such as Jones‘ Winter Fife, Bulgarian â€" or Democrat, Pride â€" of Genesee, â€" Diaâ€" mond Grit, etc., have been sent out owing to their quality rather than their yield of grain. Farmers have found, however, that all varieties would sell for about the same price per _ bushel, and therefore _ have grown those kinds from which they could secure the greatest profit, hence the great popularity of the Dawson‘s Golden Chaff with the far. mers of Ontario.
