A Newcomb, of Endicatt & Co, Dry Guods and Carpets. He says: â€" ‘"‘Both father and myself have known Mr. Cowham for somettme past; know him to be a man of exceptional business ability. He has in every way conducted the conâ€" struction and general business of the Cement Company in the most satisfactâ€" ory manner and in a way of which yery few men are capable. Very truly yours, C. A. NEewcorts Jr. Another from Vermotville, Mich., Homer G. Barber, Merchant, Says:â€" Acknowledging your favor of the 23 inst. will say, I have great confidence in the suczess of the Penin. Portland Cement Co, of Jackson, in this state. My confidence is based largely on the character of those who promoted it, and who have it in charge. I consider Mr. Cowham a level headed, caretul business man. I have not visited the works, but have a good knowledge of the entire works, 1 think the best works of its kind in the State. I have great confidence in Mr. Cowham as manager and I confidently expect good results from immediate operations. â€" They commence work about this time and I understand have large contracts. Yours traly Homrr G. BarBER. The third is from Pres D. L Quirk, of the First National Bank, Ypsilanti, Mich., and it also we give in full;â€" Your letter of the 23d came to hand ; today and carefully noted, and in | reply will say I have known by reputaâ€"| tion from the McCormick Reaper Co. of | Chicago, of Mr W. F. Cowham fori some vears. â€" In fact, saw a letter from | them which was as much im his favor| as could be, and before I took stock in the Jackson Cement Co. saw him ; several times and came to the concluâ€"| sion that he was a suitable man for the promoter and bulder of the works.‘ My judgment has proven good. _ He| has teen one of the best men in conâ€"| tracting, buying and maraging I have | ever known. â€" He has lots of push. | I think we have one of the best plants in the country and was built the most | economically of any that I have known | or heard of. Should be very sorry to have Mr. Cowham away from our plant. | He is just the man we want, and hope | it is not your intentien to try and get | him away from us in any way or shape. | Still cannot do less than answer your questions honestly. | We have been favored with letters received by Mayor Calder from inâ€" dependent sources, relating to the character of Mr. W. F. Cowham, on whose integrity and business ability so much depends on the success of the National Portland Cement Co. For ourselves we have unbounded faith in the promises he has made to found an industry here, and still believe the prospect before the persistent shareholâ€" dersto be one ofthe best. We have nothing stronger to add and have pleasure in publishing the letters. which we believe will be duplicated in Durham a year from toâ€"day. THE GENSUS ENUMERATORS. The act as to secreey reads:â€"Every | | officer or other person employed in any | 'icapacity on census is required to| ‘keep inviolate the secrecy of the inâ€"| formation gathered by the enumerators | ;'and entered on the schedules or forms. iAn enumerator is not permitted to show | \schedules to any other person, nor to‘ ‘make or keep a copy of them, nor to | ‘answer any question respecting their| | contents directly or indirectly; and the i ‘same obligation of secreey is imposed | upon commissioners and other officers ‘or employes of the outside service, as well as upon every officer, clerk or other employe of the census office at Ottawa. â€" The facts and statisties of the censas may not be used except for statâ€" istical compilations, and positive assurâ€" ance is to be given on this if a fear is entertained by any person that they may be used for taxation or any othel object. If son, daughter, or other member of your home is absent but interding to return, they will be entered with the family, but the enumerator will enter their present locationâ€"if in Canadaâ€" on a special sheet, which, at Ottawa, will enable them to preyent dupliâ€" cation. The ground covered and questions asked are very extensive, and taken individually some may appear trifling. In the aggregate however, as a country or a nation, the result is of great yalue and no item, however small should be omitted. We hope lu-,ags ot ftamilies will lend every assistâ€" ance in their power to enumerators so that the work may be of the highest value. Coming at the same time as the assessor some will likely have the taxâ€" ation idea in their minds. Thisshould be entirely thrown aside, and no reâ€" serve exercised in giving fall intermaâ€" tion. _ Emumerators are sworn to secrecy, none of the facts obtained will ever appear in detail, they will be lumped by municipalities or districts thus entirely eliminating any personal element. This week 38 eunmerators are on theroad taking the census of South Grey, and we sincerely hope that in the performance of this national duty they will be cordially assisted in every home, and every facility given them t7 make their work satisfactory and complete.
