â€P.i‘ w Last Saturday afternoon a way freight train was proceeding to Owen soun1 and when near Proton Station the engine jumped the track and climbâ€" ed the bank. It then toppled backâ€" wards, killing engineer Campbell and brakeman McCraw and seriously, vvt'r- haps fatally, injuring fireman m. McCauley and brakeman John Lancasâ€" ter. â€" Eleven cars of merchandise piled up on one another and were smashed to kindling wood and another car with four of the company‘s paioters in it were thrown on top of the pile but the men miraculously escaped. _ All the men belong to Toronto Junction, and the Globe, from whence we glean these facts says further: n UnE HaPRey ECEA CCCE C ww ce w2 CC to jumq the rails. Local officials emâ€" phatically deny that the accident was caused by the spreading of the track. Found in the Wreck. " Assgistance was immediately procurâ€" ed from Proton. and auxiliaries were deflmu‘hvd at once from Owen Sound and Toronto Junction. Brakemen McCraw and Lancaster and Fireman McCauley were still alive when extricated from the debris. Mcâ€" Craw was horribly scalded from head to foot ; McCauley from his hips down, while Lancaster, who had been thrown into the wreck from the top of a box car on which he bhad been riding, was seriously injured internally, All three were more ot less bruised. They were brought to Owen Sound by special train, which reached here at 11.30 p. m. and were immediately taken to the General and Marine Hospital. MecCraw succumbed to his terrible injuries at 5.30 this morning. Lancaster and Mcâ€" Ghastly were the discoveries of the rescuers. _ Engineer Campbeli had faced death at his post. He was found Yin- ioned ander the wreck, his hand still on the throttle of his engine, literally scalded to death. His death bad apâ€" parently been instantaneous. Sour Gas.â€"Hepworth people were bound to have oil and bored but only gas was given them. They kept on however and a flow large enough to be called the * Largest Gas Well in Ameriâ€" ca " has been struck, and we take from . an exchange this account of the discov _ ‘ ery : * At 3.30 on Tuesday afternoon . last, a short shrill blast of the derrick whistle was distinctly heard, and it was immediately surmised by the citizens of Mepworth that oil had been struck. In ten minutes nine tenchs of the populaâ€" tion of this prosperous village was clusâ€" tered around the derrick. Howeyver, it wasn‘t oil, but gas. The largest gas well in North America had been tapped. After the accident of the skipâ€"block aad been repaired at 1 o‘clock that day, drilling at once recommenced, driller: McCann in charge of the pole. Everyâ€" thing went well till 33W p, m., when with a slight gurgling sound the drnill tapped the gas vein at a depth of 1410 feet, In one second drillere McCann was * hors de combat, stretched at lengtn on the derrick floor from the effects of the gas, while rocks, dirt and water was thrown to the top of the derrigk, a distance of nearly fifty feet. The other drillers immediately formed themselyes into an ambulance and succeeded in getting McCann out of the derrick and resuscitating him. Lor a vuarter of an hour the gas continued to throw dirt and water out of the hole, and when it settled down the immense amount of gas flow could be seen. It is rather difficult to estimate what the volume of the gas will be, but it is calculated it will be in the neighborhood of 1,000,000 feet every 24 hours, with a standing pressure of probably 350 lbs. to the square inch. Drilling commencâ€" ed over a week ago when the hole was sunk about ten feet to prepare for the nitro glycerine shot. The drillets are of the opinion that the shot will increase the volume of gas 1,200,000 cubic feet per 24 hours."â€"Ex. "* Shortly before entering Proton station the train was obliged to go through a cut where a new switch was in course of construction. The direct cause of the accident is not detinitely known. _ It is supposed, however, that the workmeu employed on the switch bad left a quantity o{ grayel and stones in the flange, which _musgd t_t_iq c:ngine Cauley are still alive, but little hope is entertained of their recovery."
