The Hurons, the Lambtons, the Wentworths all show decreases. * Ontario has gained only 53,657, while Quebec shows 132439 an increase of nearly 9 per cent, while Ontario is about 2%,. One cause of this is no doubt the greater fecundity of the French race, but another is certainly the enterprising spirit of Ontario in sending her sons to people the Western provinces giving Manitoba the splendid showing of over 60 per cent, while the territories have over 130 per cent. Horace Greely‘s ery of "Go West, young man, Go West " has found no echo in French Quebec as it has in the other provinces, the Frenchman going largely south to New England, but keeping in touch with home sufficiently to be counted in the census. It is this same spirit, however, which prevented Manitoba from becoming a French province as Sir Geo. Cartier and others dreamed of. Prince EAward Island is the only proyvyince showing an actual decrease, Kingston the only city. Ottawa has stepped ahead of Hamilton, and Winiâ€" peg ahead of Halitax, St. Jonn and London. Vancouver is now the largest Pacific coast city, beating Victoria by over 5000. Sydney, C. Breton, shows the largest relative increase, from 2427 to 9908 an increase of over 400 per cent, The result in S. Grey is common to 51 counties in the province, which show more or less of a decrease since 1891, and others. like North Greyâ€"which shows an increase of 732â€"are on the right side owing to increase in urban districts like Owen Sound. Since last issue the result of the Census in regard to population has been published and the figures are disappointing, not only as a nation but as a provâ€" ince and country. However, we will get used to the unpalatable fact, and learn to take philosophically the sneers of a British Columbia paper about " proud Ontario ‘‘ having to be content with an increase of 2%$ per cent while that province has 90 per cent. The Mail and Empire makes a howl because the difference in increases in Quebec and Ontario will reduce representation from Ontario by 2 or 3 members. Why not? There was a time when differences in increases sent Ontario representation away ahead and we cannot recall any howl made by Quebec. The same paper urges the local government to enter a protest! and very unfairly makes no mention of the drain Ontario bas suffered owing to Western emigration, In 42 Ontario Counties the number of families has increased while the population has decreased giving rise to the charge that stuffing took place in 1891. While it looks strange we take little stock in it, nor do we in the ery that Quebec has been padded this time. A great deal of political manceuâ€" vering is being planned from the figures which might haye been averted had the advice of the Witness been followed by taking a census in 1896 on the change of goyvernments.
