Ohey Vfust go out lnst., when a lot of his neighbors with pike poles assisted to raise what will prove to be a commodious barn. Its Gimensions are something like 36 to 55 feet and waus frameak by Mr Cumingham Moore of South Glenely. For the fir:t aliempt by Mr M. it reflects credit upon him. The men were captd by Messrs John Weir and Dan McKinnon, the latter winning by a slight margin through some tight mortices en the other side 1 suppose. Mr John Wilson of Dromore ably superintenled everything aud gavre the word of comuand. An event like this is a rare ozcu ence in 1 neighborhood of good barns, consequently the youth snd beauty for miles monnd gatber as if io a picnic. Mauy were the engquirtes about the youth from Maxwell, who seems to voccupy qute a space in the affections of the youug Iadies. Mr Kimmuce of Durham was present part of the day trying to »l ure som» of the boys away to the cement works, buat the pay was not suticien‘. p We are sorty to report this week the continned illness of Mr Jas, Baxter who bas beeu blessed hithert>, during his long lite, with the best of health. We trust that the one thme strong coustitation wiill stand him in good stead at this time. His daughters have juâ€"t been up on their holidays. _ Sirs Walton, (Mary), returned to â€" Toronto. on _ Suturday last, bet Jenny and Helen hbave decided to reâ€" main another week, while Lettie as alâ€" ready reported leit last week for Torouto. They ail look as though there must he bracing air in the city as well as in the country, as they all look the picture of bloomins he «]th. Mrs Chas Long of Toronto, (nee Cath, Watson), is up on a visit to the parental homestead, is well and in good health, { These words set to music may be all right, but applied as they have Léon heroe ;on Thurâ€"day, they lose all their musical rhythn:, it none of their foree when they ) come in the shape of chuuks of 1ee, the size of hen frutb, instead of 1 form of | salutation. The noise of the falling bail mingled with thander was | something terriffic. The feuces and buld. ings yet show the dents of the luiiingl missifies. Â¥Frmi hus been badly bruised and knocked off the trees m large qurntiâ€" ties, while some of the chickens of our roted poultry raiser. not being up to dodging, suffered the death penaliy, What crop remaining out is badly thrashâ€" ed in some places, and will have to be cut with a mower, | One of onr old time barn raisings took place at Mr Jonn Horusby‘s on the 16th, | _ *""*Keep good company or mnone. Some few weeks ago I mentioned that the Presbyterian church people intendâ€" ed to have a(;)ir:mc but they have changâ€" ed their mind and are going to have a Harvest Home. Our people are on the move bhere. Mrs. Scarlett and daught»er were in Durham last week on business, The Misses Neal‘s is going back to Toronto. Miss Serenia Scarlett is going to Cleveland U. 8. to hunt up a friend. Mr. Isaiah McArdle, of Markdale, visited his parents here last week. Thursday evening last a district of little more than a mile wide near the townline of Egremont and Gleaelg was devastated by a hail storm of great seyâ€" erity. _ It began to rain at 4 p. m. and continued for 10 or 15 minutes and slightly cleared up before beginning aâ€" gain a mixture of rain and hail, the latâ€" ter of such a size as to cause dire hayoc. Mr. W. L. Dix on, one of our informants, says that some of the hail was 2 inches in diameter. _ He had about 20 panes of glass broken, and some of his neighbors tared as badly. . Fields of uncut oats looked as if they had been reaped. Showers of green leaves were stripped from the trees, fruit knocked down and corn fields left in a dishevelled state. Six hours afterwards on the north side of a barn the stones could be lifted in shovelfuls. To be exposed to the storm was really unsafe and from another credible source welearned that chickens actually had theirt heads cut off | It cerâ€" tainly was one of the worst storms this district ever experienced, and the loss to many farmers will be considerable : $50 in some cases will scarcely meet the damage, _ Mr. Dixon is an enthusiastic experimentalist and has six plots of tests on hand which have been injured . more or less, _ LATER.â€"See also North Egremont and Dromote correspondence the remedy that cures 2 <â€".i@ in one day This signature is on every box of the genzins . | _ LIvÂ¥EELY SCENES. â€"From 50 to 100 men ; | are now employed in the grading and | other work in connection with the Cemâ€" | ent Works. _ The track is now outlined , | from the railway alin to the Works, , | and the grading to the lake is also usder | way. There were about 30 teams on , | the other day and we believe more men ,and teams are wanted. Fsrmers 4 and 5 miles away are getting paying wagres for their teams. _ Some of our amateur photographers have been taking views of the cement blocks, stone crusher, &c, Fences are being moved for the buildâ€" ‘ ings and the company seem to be proâ€" ceeding yery Jjudiciously with the work, ‘ Mr. Stanhope was up the other day and ; was pleased with the progress made, | _ Wwere‘s riee PhcrtionarvÂ¥v.â€"Two of the young scribes who from time to time with skill and pains pick up and l send us notes and news from their home fields, hayve in the last week or two shown with what force they can use some of the long and hard words of the | tongue we all speak in.
