L Toroxto Ix SHow Tiy®.â€" The rural visitor cannot but be imptessed with the progress being made by our chief vcity in the matter of improved streets and fine buildings. â€" The car service is good it being possible to go almost anyâ€" where for 5 cts, seeing two transfers are given from the first line. The city is proud of the show, and well it may be, for the cheap travel on the occasion draws thousands there to whom the show is not the big attraction. The papers duly tabulate the enormous reâ€" ceipes made by the show, street car lines, &c., but no tabulat on we presume can be cbtained of the growth of the receipts of the big Departmental Stores. Their trade is something enormous, and one wonders whereunto it will grow. There is a hazy idea that bargains are procurable, and persistent advertising has made their name so familiar, that many go there as if to a wellâ€"known place. The fascination of crowds buyâ€" ing is infectiouns, and purchases are often made which turn out to be no bargains at all. Thousands of dollars are spent there which would have made the home merchant rejoic« and the purâ€" chaser get equal satisfaction. _ For instance a lady, not a Durham one, was reckoning up in the car on the way home the amount of her purchases, and it figured our oyer $71. . This of course is far above the average, yet it reveals the disloyalty to the locality so disâ€" gracefully prevalent. Raixy Rivenr®.â€"At Toronto last week hundreds of private post cards were being passed to visitors, as advertising matter for New Ontario. _ We did not notice till on the way home that they bore a promising rural picture of a Hourishing firm owned by one Robt, Watson, and on looking closer, sure enough we discovered our old Notmanâ€" by friend stooking with two big healthy looking sheaves in his arms and more of them lying thick on the ground. Near him was Mrs, Watson, as natural as could be, theirjson, Jim with a cradle around him, had evidently just finished cutting a splendid crop. _A snug barn and large roomy house is in sight and a glimpse of the river is seen. The legend below informs you you can have 160 acres free, No better grain growing country on the continent. 40 bushels of wheat to the acre, &¢.. #¢." Wepborn» Ix CaLGARY.â€"On August Zith last Mr. P. H. Thitbmaudeau, a forâ€" mer wellâ€"known teacher in 8. Grey was married to Miss Maggie McDonald, of Durbam, Ont. On that day Miss Mcâ€" Donald arrived from the east, and the happy couple, met once more undet new skies, at once entered into wedded bliss, The supportipg parties were Mr. A, M,. Macaulay and Miss E. Jean Mcâ€" Phail, B. A. . They took in the sights at Banff and returned to Wetâ€" askiwin, Alta, where Mr Thibaudeaun is teaching. Their old friends bere,. the RrEvr®Ew man included, wish them a full share of life‘s blessings. Mr. T. went west about a year ago, likes the country well, the district being one of the most fertile in the North West: though recently a strip of it 7 miles wide was devastated by a hail storm.
