Dr. Hutton of Durham «bly filled the position of chairman. The Hall was crowded to the door, and every corner and place an indiviâ€" dual could find standing capacity was occupied. We think the directors and all concerned in having such able talent at these gatherings should beâ€" gin early to set a movement on foot to have a large and accomodating hall built before the next annual show for really it is uncomfortable for people to be packed like herring in a barrel and in some instances sent away for want of room. Inside the dGoors however we saw and heard Fax for the first time in our life. ‘There is nothing to be admired in his «ppearâ€" ance for there were lots of better looking men there. He has a peculiar talent of his own and ro doubt the name Fax is always enough to ensure a crowd, but in our estimation personâ€" ally we would far rather listen to the beautiful strains of Peter MceArthur‘s bagpipes, and the melodious sweet notes otf Jean Renwick‘s charming vuice, and behold her pleasant countenâ€" Specches were delivered by president MceCormack, John Nichol, secretary Brodie. Last but not least, Dugald McLean, whose oratorical talent is progressing as he is advancing in age and if he is deficient on certain ocâ€" casions in the raling ianguage of our country he is all 0. The young people enjoyed themâ€" selves in other amusements till near morning. Proceeds of concert about ance. Mr. and Mrs. Ramage of the Review, were welcome callers at our residence on Show Day, on their way to Prieeâ€" yille. Miss Mary Nichol is spending awhile at her father‘s home at Mr. J Nichol‘s G. R. Glenelg. « The Communion on Sunday last in the Presbyterian church was well attended. _ About 100 communizants observed the ordinances. Rey. Mr. Varley preached Thanksâ€" giving services on Friday last and brought forward some excellent points to be thanktul for etc. A Jarge quantity of lambs and sheep were delivered in our town on Friday last. Dave MceIntyre and Malcolm Melanis are both good and extensiye buyers. John and Donald MceMillan of the South Line, Artemesia, were improvâ€" ing their stock by getting pedigreed animals of both cattle and sheep, trom noted herdsmen near Guelph. Mr Donald MeMillan has placed a fine monument at the grave of his little daughter who died last spring. It is one of the best in the cemetery here, and we noticed that Mr Dugald Ferguson of Proton, has a fine monuâ€" ment in memory of his beloved wite who only died a couple of months ago. The teachers convention was well represented from this locality and sure enough they could not escape having a rainy day either to begin or end with. Teacher Eastman of this town is to have a field meeting on Friday next for the purpose of forming acquainâ€" tance with neighboring schools. Top Cliff school and other schools will be represented. _ Refreshments in the evening. â€" The meeting is to be held on the senool grounds in town here. Mr. Alex. Livingstone is improving and there is hopes now of his recovery. * Mrs. Alex. McPherson arrived home from Manitoba where she was visiting her sister Mrs. Black tor the last two months. Mrs. McArthur of this town left last week to join her husband in North Dakota. _ Mrs McArthur was Miss Eaphemia McArthar, sister of merchâ€" ant MeArthur of this place. Wi!l Corlett and Thos aelutosh left for Dulath on Monuday last where they exâ€" peet to stay for the winter months. Lawrence and Corlett are making »hip timber around the burg. _ They expect to be bere about three mouths. Miss Clara Lake returned from town on an extended visit. Crist.‘s drives will be short now. Wm xceCalmon, of Varney, called on friends here on Thanksgiving day. Bob Corlett is busy hanling ship timber which he has the contract of. Some of our girls are going to take part in the framing business. _ We wish them much joy. xr a'm;l xrs Wm Smith, sr.. returned from Cbatham where thevy had been visiâ€" ting their brother xr xills. We wonder how Will has changed his trail from east to west, we suppose there is better fishing west and if the two Toms found the roads rmuddy the other vight. We take the following from the Globe: * The Globe has receives letters from inanafacturers suggesting revision _ of the tariff, and the revision indicated is generally the reduction of the duty on the raw material." Just so. When it comes to bnying anvything for himself the manufacturer forgets all about the necessity of retalintâ€" ing against the United States. He wants the Juty 4aken clean off, and the goods of the bated Awerican admitted tree _ But when it comes to the raw material of the farmer, that is quite another matter. The very thought of it sets the retaliation ferer raging, and is uever stops short of the filsy per cent mark.â€"Farmers * Sun. o 4 LIPE.AMONG THE LOWLM ANOTHER MATTER. The Churoh should see that civil law le brought in barmony with Divine law. To evangelize the ballotâ€"box is the high commission given Christian citizenship. * No more licen«e, but suppression, " is the battleâ€"cry voiced by every Christâ€" an tongue, and heard in eyory Christian bome. The Church is the divinely commissionâ€" ed leader in all moral and social reform. Shall the liquor interests dominate our churches, our schools, our culture, our euterprise, our capital, and subordinate the rights and interests of a patriotic and righteons majority to the lustfal gainings of a selfish minority ? Wl;on the pulmâ€"t seeks to make men good, and leayes it to law to make them bad, the work of the Church is undone. Revr. Dr. Rackiu writes : Whiskey must go; and if every preacher in the Province will do his duty, the time of its going is net far off, " y Cc A license ballot has no place in the hands of a Christian man. The temperance reform stands toâ€"day * upon the heights of answered prayer." I1f God has institated civil goveroment for moral ends, the Church «hould see that it is not nsed for immworal purposes. Rum not only pall« the Church from men, but pulls men from the Church. If a man‘s name has the right to be on a saloonâ€"license petition, it has no right to be on the Church list. * Rorward !" is the word that comes ringing alony the lines from the Divine side of the confliet. i Every vote against the C TAE CHURCKH V. Indeed, it is not flatâ€" tery to sa y that the "Beautiful Gates Ajar," as depicted by this company is one of the most enâ€" trancing spectacles ever seen. The scene oper . with a mass of clouds, through a rift of whig, is seen a passing group of angels bearing Undio Tom to heaven. â€" A large "‘gloria" of iridescent splendor is brightly twinkling in front . The clouds disperse, revealing Uncle Tom with angel escort before the golden gates, ‘on either side of which poised upon magnificent pillars inlaid with pearl and gold, stand angel sentinels with expanded wings. . Change follows change. Numerous angels appear from out the fleecy clouds which now surround the scene like a halo of glory. In the dscp center a sudden movement of the clouds is seen, and like a morning stat Uke the central jowelin acrown of diadems, sure« rounded by whispericg angels, little Eva, with beckoning hands, smiles down upon TUncle fom, while the beautiful gates slowly open to the great city that Nes beyond. Itis a splendid sight to see.
