THE DURHAM REVIEW: PÂ¥ f Meetings are being held this week at Webster‘s and Townsend‘s Lake School House at Hanover, Thursday evening. All three candidates are present and thus almost for the first lnime, an opportunity is being given the public near their homes of getting posted on County Council doings. We have not had opportunity to attend any of the meetings, and what the result will be or should be is not for us to say. We hope the campaign will be conducted honorably, free from politics, and however it may result, there will be a good man left at home. Warden McKirnon‘s exâ€"| perience has given him a grasp of the | situation not passessed by the other two, though their record in theiri’ municipality councils and elsewhere | gives complete assurance of their fitâ€" / ness for the position. Contests are | taking place in 4 out of the 8 divisions | so that more than half, we should say f threeâ€"fourths of the old council will | assemble in January. | The presents were as follows : Mr C. Gadd and Family, 8 day clock, Mr and Mrs John Carson, bed spread, Ella Carson. two cups and saucers, ’Mr and Mrs James Eden, lamp, Ethel Eden, tancy pin cushion ; Mr and Mrs Robinson, Toronto, linen table cover, and Dorothy Robinson, pepper and salt shakers; Mr _ and Mrs R Eden. linen table cover ; Mr T Mcâ€" Anulty and family, cake stand and set doilies; _ Mrs T Allen, sewing machine ; Mr R Allen, dinner set ; Max Allen, silver eruet; _T Allen, album ; J Allen, Dawson, §5 ; Mrs D Allen and Miss Lizzie, stiver butter dish ; _ Miss L Avery, paper rack ; Miss L Fee, cheese dish ; Miss Jean Gray, cup and saucer and teaâ€"pot stand ; Miss Mary McCrie, cake stand ; _ Mrs J Boget, pair towels ; Mr and Mrs E Grav, Dundalk. sugar bowel ; W McCalmon, horse shoe. _ The presents as will be seen were numerous and valuable. The Review extends hearty songratulations. Varney Nuptials. On Xmas day at 2 p.m.. in the church at Varnev, Mr Nelson Eden and Miss Maggie Allen were united in wedlock by Rev. Mr Miller, in the presence of a number of relatives and friends of both parties. Mr Ricnard Allen and Miss Levina Avery acted as supporters, and very hearty were the congratulations and goud wishes exâ€" tended to the young couple on their auspicious union oa the noted day. The bride looked attractive in | a light gray tweed suit, worn over & pink silk blouse, and worse a black picture hat. Both bride and groom carried a bunch of ho!lly, tied with pink ribbon. s wlo The most appalling railway disasâ€" ter that has occurred in Janada for many years, took place last Saturday at 10 p. m., in a cold night and raging snow storm. _ A heavy G. T. R. pasâ€" senger train, while running at the rate of 48 miles an hour, smashed head first into a freight, at Wanstead. a smal) station about 48 miles west of London, with the result that 28 were killed, and more than that number infiured. A jury is trying to 4x the blame, which seems to be divided among 4 or 5 different operators and despatchers, with the company culâ€" pable to some extent by overworking employees. Mrand Mrs W. H. Cole, Flint, Mich., known in Durham, are among the injured. _ The horrors of the aceident are indescribable. Misses McKinnon and Patton, Mr. and Mrs, Win. Coleridge and Mr. and Mrs, C. Ramage spent a pleasant evenâ€" ing at Mr, and Mrs. A. McDonald‘s, near Crawford on Friday last. County Council Campaign. DIRE DISASTER.
