Pope Leo XIII, toâ€"day Mmich 3. celeâ€" brates his silver jubilee, the 25th anniâ€" versary of his coronation as Pope. _ This year also he celebrates his golden inbilee as Cardinal, haying received the " hat " from Pins IX in 1858. Alsothis yoar he will celebrate his diamond jubtlee in the episcopacy for he was ordnined archbishop be Gregory XVIII in 18483. _ His whole life has been an exempliification of the truth, that the race is not to the swift northe battle to the strong." _ He was often delicate, life despaired of, and more vhap once rivals for high positions pressed their claims lightly, thinkiog he wonld soon be gone. He has outlivod them all. is uow oyer 90, and only recently phyâ€" sicians expressed the opinion that he might liye to be loo. _ Apart from his power and influence in his own church, he has ever been admired for his broad and kindly spirit, ard his occupancy of the papal chair has done not a little to add to the strength of the great church of which he is the head. The government has still a majority of 7. counting Mr. Gamey. Should N. Renfrew return a Liberal as before, they will have 8. Should Mr Gamey go against them, and Renfrew return a Conservative, they will still have 5, with the speaker off, 4, and this is the worst that can be. This will take close watching by the Liberal Whips and will be an incentive to regular attendance. The temperance forces of the riding, fresh from rolling up a big maâ€" jority 2t the referendum decided to take a hand in, not by bringing out a candidate, but by presenting to each of the candidates a pledge, which if accepted by both, was to leave temâ€" perance workers free to follow their political leanings, but it only one took it then they were to rally to the supâ€" port of that one. _ Dr Stewart took the pledge, Mr Clark demurred, and the temperance candidate has been left in the lurch by temperance voters, for certainly any approximation to the vote of the reterendum would have elected Dr Stewart. This confirms the charge often made that political affiliations are stronger than temperâ€" ance sentiment. _ Mr Clark, Centre Bruce, has increasâ€" ed his majoritvy from 5 to 53, and this will no doubt be accepted as final. Dr Stewart, though receiving an extraâ€" ordinary vote in is own town and neixzhborhood is out of it and a surâ€" prising thing is that his opoonent did not old a single meeting, thugh we have heard that he had a corp: <f about two dozen workers of the nousre to house order. The defeat of Dr Stewart was a surprise and one cannct help reflecting on what may have been one cause. The Presbytery of Saugeen met on Tuesday ‘at Mt Forest, Revy Mr Aull, the moderator _elect in the chair. _ On motion of Rev Mr Hanua. Prof. Meâ€" Comb, of Queen‘s was nominated as successor to Dr Gordon in Halifax Colâ€" lege. Since Dr _ Gordon left Halhfax College to be principal of Queen‘s the nomination is on the principle that fair exchange is no robbery, _ As Mr Broad‘s term of appointment as ordamed imisâ€" sionary tin Cedarville has expired the Presbytery _ commended him to the Home â€"Mission committee for further appointment and arranged to secure further supply for Cedarville beginning with April Ist, _ Mr Stevenson was exâ€" amined and received as a student hayâ€" ing m view the Presbyierian Ministry. The surprise of the day was the eAgerâ€" ness with which Commissions to the (General Assembly were grasped at. The general impression was that owing to the great distance to the meeting place at Vancouver and the consequent expense. commissions would go aâ€"begâ€" ging. but instead of that there is eyery likelihood that twice as many will go from the Presbytery as there are comâ€" missions,. _ The fortunate ones to whown the rotation gives the place for the presâ€" ent year are Rey‘ds Edmison, Dobson and Tate and probably all these will go. Presbytery adjourned to meet at Holâ€" stein on the first Tuesday of July. n Chog aindices, Hade by IXPERIAL OIL COXPAIT. For Sale at W. Black‘s Store. N. York, Liberal. Centre sruce Conservative. The result of last Thursday‘s elecâ€" tions in North York and Centre Bruce, was one for each of the parties. _ Hon. Mr Davis defeated MrLennox by twice the majority of the general election. Mr Lennox even having a reduced vote in his own town. The result seems to be a condemnation of Mr Lennox‘ attitude, he refusing to diseuss public questions, but continually harpâ€" ng on protests and irregularities and on personal matters. _ Mr Davis has been loyally ;sustained. the governâ€" ment has been strengthensd, and we hope no opportunity has been given to print to one irregular or. dishonest action.
