Sir, or perhaps some of your readers, or more likely some of my own relatives might poâ€"sibly any here by your letter you have simply made yourself out an old ox driver, _ If sauch were the case, the name sir, of course would not sound very big. alâ€" though I don‘t know that a man should be ashamed of it. Agnin, Sir, supposing there was any honor in connection with the name, then I hold 1 am about as worthy of that honor as perhaps any mher ‘man in the two Counties tuâ€"day, The good old ox, that true friend and faithful servant, of the ioneerâ€"What would we have dore witKout. him ; like the wild buffrilo of the plains he has hecmne-u‘thinq of the past. you never see or benr of him any more. ~ To me he was not simply my faithful servant, but for manyâ€"aâ€"day my onltycompanion. Is it any wonder I like him? We had a long, long nequnintance one with anoâ€" ther, for 12 long years | drove him in the township of Elderslie, in the townâ€" chip of Ek-l:;'v-l{c)-n‘t'l followed himwm some 1) ye irs and in the town of Durham one sutmtrer, I and my oxen, Sir, claim the credit of all the stone in Charter Smith‘s mould ing shop. ‘Then again, Sir. I hold I have drivan them in many ways that few drivers ever did, for instance I have often drove him single across the Sanâ€" geen river, sitting upon his back, when there was nothing visible but his head. That awas one of the many oxen and the only one Tever drove, that would take the water like a duck. 1 have already told you that Tâ€"drove one through Durâ€" ham in the shafts. _ Another, 1 drove | through ‘Durham. he too,, was single,. but not in the shafts. _ He had his load upon his back, bound for Elderslie. Kome few miles before reaching there, he and I calied at the bouse of an old Bcotch Presbyterian minister by the name of Eckford, a fine old gentleman, not long from the old country, a widow | er with a family of ore boy and two girls, and whoJater on used to preach for us occasianally, and a clever man he was, and 1 often wondered why he came to settle down in the bush. _ When 1 and my ox wentin, we found him standâ€" ing alone in the yard. the first time 1 bad ever seen‘him, and I says to him: * Can you give me a bite of anything tor my ox"? Heâ€"shook his head, "No. my young man," he says, were it a | bite_for yourself. you should have it, but T can spare nothing for your ox." [ turned to go, the boy some 12 or 14 years of age appeared at the edge of the | woods, a little way from where we were standing, with a yoke of oxen and a drag of wood, just upon the spur of the moment I says to the father + How Jame is growing." â€" He looks at meand says " Do you know Jamie" * Yes‘ and nip<Iullince ol drdedictuint edtactiutiiit m ‘How do you come to know him*‘ *Beâ€" cause he and were scholars together at the Durham Sunday School" _ *Put your .0X in the stable and I will find him a bite MNet at Clerk‘s office, Hanoyer. on | Tuesduay the 15th Dec, â€"mstant. accordâ€" € ing to Statute. _ Members »ll present.
