The very carpets had a novel coloring. as if they had been at some magic cleansing and dyeing establishment." Dear Aunt Mary was telling her favorâ€" ite niece ber "queer" feelings after long illness. She was unconscious that she was repeating the story that has heen told by convalescents from the time of Hazlitt till the present day,. Familiar things take on a disguise to the recovering eye, â€" Even the face of a friend bears a new depth of meaning. * Did she use to look at me with such intensity of gaze? â€" Did she clasp my band so warmly ? â€" Was her voice so gentle and her word so full of hope and courage before l was sick ?2" __ The wellâ€"known names of N., G..and J. McKechnie meets us in three places setting forth their ability to supplyLumâ€" ber, Shingles, Lath, a{«-., as well as Groceries, Dry Goods, kKlour and:Oatâ€" meal. J. H. Hunter had just received a large stock of clothing and bad a ** good black lustre for 124 cents." one of the few quoted pricesin the paper. John H Brown of the Victoria Tea Store anâ€" nounces greatly reduced prices "for Cash only after March Ist" as be is selling off,. _ John Uameron‘s ad bas an upâ€"toâ€"date look to present day «yes for it announces * Nagasaki Japan Teas" and had tine flavored Young Hyson at 50 cts, 5 lbs for $2.25, and could give you a heavy quilted overcoat for $7.00." J W Crawtord, of * Rockville Milis" Benâ€" tinck was declaring "War! War! against all kinds of sawâ€"logs with the cweular saw,. and was selling lumber, &c., at »downhill prices," A waole column set forth the merits of the printâ€" ing and publishing departments of the Revirw office. _ Geo Russell bhad a large stock of Dry Goods which he was selling cheap, and E and A Davidson were making a special discount for one month. Geo Rutherford, of Dundalk, was evidently doing a pushing business as an Insurance, Loan and Generai Agency, and Bolister‘s of Flesherion wanted you to buy Books, Stationery, Biscuits, Pipes, and Sewing Machine needles,. _ A small piece ot a page has disappeared and possibly may have had some other names, but these show that the paper had a good start. Fome baye spanned the 26 yeiaus and are still activeâ€" ly in the barness. others have lefc the busy scere, and many new men are on the stage. To the human creature just returning to life after lingering for days at the gates of death the whole world asâ€" sumes a new aspect.. Even inanimate objects seen, to say : _** You came near leaving us forever. _ No wonder you forâ€" got our shapes and colors." And the warm, conscious, loving friend bends over us and with eye and voice says, "See, I love you more truly than before I knew how I should miss you!" So after long sickness, as after a hard, cold winter, the world breaks into n new and blossoming spring.â€"Youth‘s Companion. _ Prominent on the first page R. Mcâ€" Farlane aunounces a large Stock of Cutters, good finish and best material, while Hastie & Grant, near by, are Pushâ€" imng winter goods off cheap, giving speâ€" cial values in furs. _ Amongst the busiâ€" ness cards we tind F. McRae, Real Esâ€" tate Agent ; D. McDonnell, Barrister; lsaac Traynor, Surveyor. Draughtsâ€" man,. &c., Jos McArdle, Conveyancer, &c., and a number more scactered from Dundalk to 0. Sound. So much for that. Now for a run throughâ€"the news ?2â€"no, the advertiseâ€" ments, for the living interest that cenâ€" tres round a name is much more utlracâ€" tive than the news that were new 26 years ngo. That Mr. Townsend endenyored faithâ€" fully to carry out his program old readâ€" ers will admut. _ He was a good deal of a scientist,â€"perhaps more than a politiâ€" cian,â€"and manvy â€" interesting articles, original and selected, appeared in bis raper, and the interests of the town and ocality received due avtention. Atter promising that Agricultural and horticultural matters would occuâ€" py an important place in his Journal, that maumnicipal affairs would receive full attention, that there would be other attractive departments, he concludes : **In short is will be our constant effort and aim so to conduct the ReyIEw that it will be a welcome visitor in every household in the County ot Grev.‘* people, and enjoy a share. of their patronage.‘" He then refers to his political affiliations declaring his purâ€" pose to support the governments of Mr McKenzie and Mr Mowat as "he had for several years observed their atle and honest administration of public affairs. " vurseives that we can supply that want, we thus send our vensure ; hopeâ€" fal that the Grer RevieEw may comâ€" mend itself to the intelligence of our The editor in his introduciory adâ€" dress states his position very frankly as follows : .. "In commencinge the issue of a newspaper in the Town of Durham we do so with considerable bhesitation. _ ‘I‘he times, and espectially the circumstances of this town and the surrounding country at préesenl are not such as to give much enrcouragement : still, as the want of a paper or 1 more progressive and liberal character than our respected contemporary, has been felt for many year, and as we flatter ourselves that we can sunvly that The first publisher was Mr Joseph ‘Townsena, uow in Torunto.. He had tor some time eviously been publishâ€" ing the *‘Dnug:lk Guide,‘"‘ but secing ia beter opening in this good town " pulled up stakes " came here early in 1878 and the first issue bears date otf * Feb. 14, 1878." 120. 3 3 NWmaled a few weeks ago we had been favored by Mr John Graâ€" ham with the first number of the REeviEw. We propose this week briefly w take x look over it in the company of our readers and recall a few things of the origin of this paper, now oyer 26 vears old, of sturdy growth, and firmly established in South Grey. 8 THE GREY REVIEW â€"vou. 1, NO. 1 As we intimated After long Illness. : Wmm Johnston, C.
