"Come here," said grandmamma with a smile, From the rocking chair where she sat "God has sent you two little sigters, Now what do you think of that ?" Bess looked at the babies a moment. Wwith their wee heads yellow and ! _ brown, And to grandmamma sobetly said, **Which one are you going to drown"? We are pleased to see »o many of our citizens taking pride in their homes The word, "home" next to that of *"*mother," is the greatest ever uttered by human tongue, What arefuge the home is when the daurkness gathers! How glad one is to get a gllmpse of home when time and space have sepâ€" arated him from it if even but for a brief period ! Theresecems to be a good natured rivalry here in an effort to make "our home" look a little neater and thus be the more inviting to the occyvpants than all others. Such rivalâ€" ry is certainly pardonable. In ber dsvelopment, her progress, in the shaping of her destiny as one of the great nations of the world, enâ€" jJoying all the freedom which the treâ€" est of all free people could enjoyâ€"yet forming a mighty part of the greates, Empire the world has ever seen and prepared when necessary to assume its fair portion of Imperial responsibâ€" ility, as she did when many of her sons becaimne Imperial herves on the battléfields of South Africaâ€"in the great work, I say, of assisting in the development and progress of Canada I desire to take an active part as one of her public men. Gentlemen, Canada has mado great strides in the past, but my honest beâ€" lief is that what she has »ccomplished in thepast will be far surpassed in the future, and that too in the near fatare. Now a few words in conciasion in reference to the question of transporâ€" tation. with which my department has so much todo ard in which the peuple of this Dominion from the At: lantic to the Pacific are sq deeply inâ€" terested. The actual financial interâ€" ests of the people of the west and the gast are nut alike upon this question. The former are interested in having cheir products transported to the markets of the old world as cheaply as possible. _ ‘The people of the East and more especiaily the Martime Provinces, are interested in having the western trade carried on through Canadian channels and will never rest content until the exports and imâ€" ports of Canada, both in Summer and Winter p»ss through Canadian seaâ€" rts. ‘This is my text from which f(;hall preach and from which I shall neyer ti<e. "IL am a great believer that the first, the highest, the most pressing duty of a pablic man is to endeavor to increase the progress and prosperâ€" ity and wealth earning power of the people. Give the farmer a chance to realize better returns from his crops enable the merchant to obtain a largâ€" er profit on the overturn of the merchâ€" andise which bhe has to sell, enable the manufacturer to make larger profiis on his manutactured goods, enable the lumbermen and fisherman to reap & greater reward from his enâ€" terprize and skill and toil, belp the laboriog man, the man who works his brain and hands combined to ob tain a higher wage for his labor and you thereby add materially to the sum of human happiness all around. Make people better off, remove from them the depressing weight of finanâ€" cial stress and poverty, and you will make them better men and women. I WwHICH ONE WAS KEPT ? An interesting question has arisen between the TownshiF and the newlyâ€" incorpated Village o Neustadt as reâ€" gards certain school monies. _ A numâ€" ber of the farmers living in the Townâ€" ship belong to the village school, These, however, gay the Township‘s general levy into the Township treasâ€" ury and the village naturally looks for a rebite of the amount paid in. Clerk Fortune, uot being clear on the mate ter, wrote to the Municipal World, as to what the law says in this connection. The Municipal World replied that the Township is not compelled to pay ovyer the amount thus paid by these supâ€" porters ofthe village school who are residents of the township. _ These ?eople are therefore paying into a fund rom which they get no returns, which appears to us to be unfair.
