Siowly but surely men are coming to see that the bar is no part of our business life. A Moperxn BuvEBEArD.â€"Shocking is the story from Laporte, Ind., of a series of murders committed by a Mrs Guinness, who, by a matrimonial advertisement, describing herself as a " comely widowp" lured wealthy suitors to her home, from which they never returned. The clue was found a few weeksago when her house was barned down, and she with her three children burnea to death, . Later it is being suspected *"*she " is still alive and thac the headless trunk of a womâ€" an in the ruins was another yvictim. Miller, M. P., who is giying a service this riding never had before in either House. The town was pained on Friday last to learn that death had taken this young man, just entering upon life, at the age of 21 years, For about two years he had been in the employ of the Masseyâ€"Harris firm in Toronto, and latterly was promoted to vhe painting department, He was not long in this till trouble began and it is thought he contracted lead poisoning for his health rapidly failed, He came home a few weeks ago and was around and hopeful even the day before he died. He will be sincerely mourned by his parents, his brother Nixon, of Texas and five sisters, He was buried on Sunday last in Saugeen Cemetery, there being a very large concourse of mourners, whose presence as well as beautiful floral offerings testified to the respect for the deceased and symâ€" pathy with the liying. Rev. Mr. Jamieson conducted the services, the pallâ€"bearers being Wes,. and Melyille Storey, Harry and Geo, Burnett, Wm. Johnston and Dan McFadden. Thursiay, 7th May, at the bhome of her niece, Mrs. Alex, Beggs, the above lady passed away in her 77th year. For the past four years she has been assiduously cared for by Mrs. Beggs being totally blind for that time. Her removal in her helplessness was a happy relief, _ She was buried on the Oth inst in Saugeen cometery. The . Temperance Convention for East Grey at Flesherton on Tuesday broke up fruitless, Mr. I. B. Lucas butted in and the attempt to introduce politics being resented, the meeting closed and nothing wae done, a result very satisfactory no doubt to Mr. Lucas, The Reform Convention is beâ€" ing held toâ€"day and we are assured a canrdidate will be brought out, Discount sale of Dress Goods on Saturday at Grant‘s. Young being Superintendent, This week the overflow of children in the primary department of the Public School compelled the trustees to fall back on the courtesy of the Library Board for ‘an extra room, Miss Edith Grant has been engaged for the balance of the term. DExEo Drawx.â€"The deed for the Armoury site has been conyeyed we believe from the Edge Estate to the town,. â€" The location is on the level spot north of the Hughes propeity, the new street, to be registered as a street of the town running between the armory and the market scales. We hope the government will now use all expedition in setting things aâ€" ‘ going, though really it does not become the town to be urging haste, OrvicraL I®FORMATION â€"The Walkâ€" erton and Lucknow Railway, which has been under construction for a couple of years from Proton, on the Torontoâ€"Owen Souud line, to Walkâ€" erton, Ont., is reported to be practicâ€" ally completed. A spur line has been graded from Hanover to Braut, for convenience of the Durbham Cement Co. (Paidâ€"inâ€"advance subscribers to the REVIEW wishing the Weekly Globe may secure it by forwarding us the balance, 25 cents.) Captain Snider is in town every Saturday eyening now getting No. 4 Company into shape for the great Quebec celebration. _ He wants a few more recruits, placing the limit of height at 5 feet 10 inches which bars us out we find by hailf an inch, _ Now your Majesty, don‘t you think this is too high a limit? The hero of the coming occasion, the Prince of Wales, is not up to this standard by a few inches, â€" Besides isn‘t a big man likeâ€" lier to get shot than a small one, while clear eyes and steady nerves are not measured by inches? â€" Captain Snider is following instructions and we hope he will get a right good contingent for Quebec, one that will do us honor in drill, demeanor and dimensions. Trr Rouxp Ttur WoruLo.â€"Under League auspices, an appreciative aud i. ence gathered in the Methodist church Tuesday evening to hear our new C. L. A. President, Mr J. M. Kearns, of Arthur, relate the story of his travels around this old globe of ours with the allâ€"Canadian lacrosse team last sumâ€" mer. Gifted with splendid descriptâ€" ive powers and an excellent memory, Mr Kearos in simple, direct style, touched on all countries yisited and any characteristics of countries nud‘ inhabitants, but his opinion was not, in any degree lessened, . rather strengthened, that Canada was lhe‘ best land under the sun ; the land of greatest freedom, brightest opportunâ€" ities and highest morals. In their 5 mos. trip, they travelled 30,000 miles, spent 60 days on waler, and touched every continent but South America, Before and after the address, some of Durham‘s budding vocalists, Misses Dawkins, Everitt, A. Limin and Mr F. Benton favored the audience with fine solos, the Reid brothers, W,. K. and Thos. with a duett, which was heartily encored, and Mrs Sproat with a recitation,. Miss RitaIrwin made an efficient accompanist, Votes of thanks were presented the musical entertainâ€" ers and Mr Kearns for his able and interesting address. & ONTARIO ARCHIVEs TORONTO THE REVIEW, DURKHAM, ONT. The Yellow â€" Label CGentlemen, â€" After a chase of over two weeks, which was not at all on his tracks however, Moir was captured on a farm near Arthur, He bad engaged as a farm hand, and was giving satisâ€" faction, though his employer was a httle curious about his antecedents, Working near the highway a stage driver noticed him day by day and was struck with his likeness to pubâ€" lished photos, _ He quietly toll what he saw, and the police and detectives very cleverly did the rest. Posing as horse buyers the two deâ€" tectives entered the stable with the farmer and edging nearer to the unâ€" suspecting Moir they seized him and at once he divined their purpose. He struggled with them for nearly 10 minutes, trying to get his hands on a revolyer he carried, but he failed or there might have another fatality} for five of the six chambers were load* ed,. Hegave up, exhausted, and was handcuffed and in due time was taken to London where the crime was comâ€" mitted. It will be remembered be shot to death, Lioyd, his superior officer, who was reprimanding him for drunkeness and unsoldierly conduct, and fled. He got rid of his regimentals somehow, and begged a liying till he reached Elora where he engaged with the far» mer This is another of the fruts of the liquor traffic. _ He blames his calamiâ€" ty on the drink which has blotted out one life and may two. The young ladies of the B. Y, P, U, are holding a social in ths Baptist Church next Thursday evening, May 14. A good program will be given and dainty refreshments served, Adâ€" mission 15 cts. Everybody welcome, It is reported that I have withâ€" drawn from the campaign,. Why such a report should be circulated is beyond my comprehension, unâ€" less the wish be Father to the thought, Moir, the Murderer, Captured I wish it distinctly understood that I am a Candidate for the representation of South Grey, in the Legislature, and if elected will endeavor to give the closest attenâ€" tion to the affairs of the Province in general, and my Constituency in partlcular, _ It is my intention to conduct the campaign free from everything personal, of everything that will cast a reflection on myâ€" self, or the Electors of the Conâ€" stituency,. If I cannot be elected by the aid of what is perfectly defensible, I do not wish to be elected,. It is my wish to emphasâ€" ize the moral side of politics and fight fair, so that when the Election is over, I can look back with satisâ€" faction, knowing that I did not depreciaee politics .
