The price of Can« adian wools in England is from 40 to 50 per cent,. lower than a year ago. Last year buyers were paying 16 to l7¢ for unwashed wool, and 25¢ to 26¢ a Ib, for washed fleece. These were Toronto quotations. â€" Atlocal shipping points the prices would be adittle less. This‘ spring dealers claim that they will have to buy wool at a cost of 10c in loronto for unwashed, and 12 to 13c a lb. for washed fleece. The intention was to bhave an army 25 or 30 thousand strong assemble on | the old battleflelds, but the problem of | cost and railway transportation has| caused the whole scheme to be & | bandoned so far as the Department of | Militia is concerned, This will be a‘ great disappointment to the volunteer regiments as many had begun to count | big on the outing. Was Lapiks‘ NiGgHT.â€"To be on a par with the young men, who held a social some time ago, the youug ladies of the Baptist Church held their social Thurday evening last and we yenture to state, was fully the equal of that given by the men, _ The schoolâ€"room was crowded with an audience who duly appreciated a fine program of solos, duetts, choruses, recitations, club swinging, &c, Miss Dora Burnet was right at home as chairlady while Mrs, Newton presided at the organ with her usual grace. _ Following the program, refreshments were served, the ice cream being unusually enjoyed by two of the yeung men. The ladies of this Church, baving finâ€" ished their famous autograph quilt, held an entertainment in Ailan‘s School House on Tuesday evening last, Rev, Canon Spencer of Mt. Forest, delivered his very interesting illustraâ€" ted lecture on the early settler of 50 years ago. The views were yery clear and distinct and showed the scenes of pleasure and trouble through which theimimnigrant passed from Portsmouth to Owen Sound. After the lecture, the ladies seryed a yery dainty luncheon. Then camethe interesting partâ€"the exhibit and sale. In introducing this part of the proâ€" gramme, the Rector made a few reâ€" marks,. _ He stated that the quilt, through the zealous work of the ladies netted the congregation the large sum of about $212. This with the receipts at the door, about $15, and the price of the quilt, $13, made a total of about $240 for the work, Mr Clark, the pleasing and popular auctioneer, wielded the hammer, and 10 a very few minutes had the article sold for the goodly sum of $13 to Mr. Wes. Arnott. The meeting closed with the doxology St. Paul‘s Church, Egremont Toronto On Monday last the long anxiety reâ€" garding the fate of the Local Option Law in Durham came to an end, and the decision makes it certain that the Byâ€"Law and all that it means stands good, _ We hope the result will prove that the moral welfare of the town wil be clearly and permanently honeâ€" fitted by the measure. As we said beâ€" o e the botels must adjast their rates t the new conditions, and temperâ€" ance neople will not complain, Every service rendered should be paid for, We hope the law in Durham will be respected to the full and we are sure uo business will be hurt becauseintoxâ€" icating liquor as a beverage is not sold over a bar. Mr. Justice Teetzel has refused the application to quash the local ‘option byâ€"law of the town of Durham. It was necessary to show that 28 votes were illegally cast. Eight of these were conceded as being illegally cast by the town. It was shown that 18 voters whose names appeared as having cast their votes had no qualification whatâ€" ever, and that 35 others had not sufâ€" ficient qualification to enable them to yote. His Lordship says : "The evidence shows that these names were put on without any color or justification,. The only explanation the clerk offers of his extraordinary conduct is that they were not placed there with any intention of aiding either one side or the other in the said contest." Local Option Stands The following is the official judgâ€" ment as it appeared in the Toronto Star : His Lordship, however, decides that he cannot go behind the voters‘ list to the assessment roll, and that those whose names appear on the former ave entitled to yote. He concludes: "In?view of the unjustifiable and extraordinary conduct of respondent‘s clerk in preparing the yoters‘ list, in adding a name to it after it had been certified by the county judge, and it unlawfully giving certificates, thus enabling many persons to yote withâ€" out proper authority, I think that while the motion must be refused, it should hbe without costs." At the meeting of Council on Saturâ€" day, on motion of J. H. Brown, 8. P. Saunders, the tender of Messrs Crowâ€" ley and McDonald, Contractors for the bridge, was accepted, it being the lowest. They are to enter into ‘bonds to haye it completed without undue delay,. The claim of Miss McDonald for in* juries on street last winter was not accepted. On motion of Brown and Kress, Mayor and Clerk were instructed to make final settlement with Sirrs Bros. by relinquishing their claims on the deposit of $500 and having the property deeded to the town. The town receiyes $5500 insurance in cash and has the property to presâ€" ent to another manufacturer, Sirrs‘ Bros. have hbad an offer of $1500.00 made them but we do not know if they have accepted it,.
