We had the unique pleasure recentâ€" | ly of " sitting at the~feet of one of the most interestinz and entertaining personages of South Grey, Mr Malâ€" colm McPhee, of Nenagh, in the township of Normanby, whose porâ€" trait we have the pleasure of presentâ€" \ ing above. As is well known he is a po]itician of a pronounced type, holdâ€" ‘ ing firmly to his views without beâ€" ing unfair or offensive to his oppon«? ents and being possessed of an extraâ€". ordinary memory he recalls the events of the past in picturesque array and in perfect order, and without notc, record or help of any kind. The reâ€" cord we shall present is made entirely from notes taken in his presence. These records he brought forth from the storehouse of his mind sitting reflect‘vely looking into the past and evidently recalling every incident in its original setting, and we could it seemed have secured had it been necâ€" essary, the color of the neckties ~or the style of the hats of the politicians of fifty years ago. As the record to some extent is :. personal narrative no apology is necâ€" essary for introduciuf personal referâ€" ence to the veteran of 78 years, who barring accidents, bids fair to equal the age of his father who lived over the century mark. Mr McPhoe was of the hardy highâ€" land stock that emigrated from the western isles and coasts of Scotland in the first half of last century, and from his personal knowledge of Scotâ€" tish localities and people, aided by interviews with his countrymen since, he is a veritable encyClopedia of information regarding the lineage and ancestors of the highlanders of South Grey, aysand beyond it. It is rare indeed to find a mind so plastic or a memory so clear as the veteran whose portrait appears above He was born in Tapall, Ardmeannach, parish of Kil{ischin and Kilvickeoâ€" wan. Island of Mull, on the estate of Chief MacLean of Lockbuie.â€" This was nearly on the track of !.ohn Boys‘ Norfolk Suits 2 piece. yer POLITICAL HISTORY OF SOUTH GREY A. D. Ferguson, what is now Grey being a part of the Wellington district. Fergâ€" uson won. Grey was formed in 1852 and the first general election was held in July 1854, the candidates being a land agent named George Jackson, Richâ€" ard Carney, Owen Sound then owner of the Owen Sound Times and Chas. Rankin, a surveyor, also of Owen sound. â€"Mr Jackson as a radical carâ€" ried the county and thus began his political career which ended about 28 years later, * Mr McPhee was one of the first subscribers to the Owen Sound Times which began in 1853, and in which appeared articles more or less partiâ€" zan. It appears that even at that far back date, instrumental music was ressed into the campaign for our inâ€" fonnant remembers distinctly of Mr Carney exulting in his paper that a highland piper hired by Mr Jackson, had yet voted Carnuey, and there could be no uncertainty about a vyote then, for these were not days of the ballot, AnotherEquib in rhyme endâ€" ed with â€" " Far be the day, Before a drinking teetotaler will he member for Grey.
