At this period besides the Logislaâ€" tive Assembly, Canada was governed by a Legislativre Council, a kind of Senate, but elective, its term being 8 years, To 1856 an election was held for this body. Grzy at that time was included in the *‘ Saugeen Divison," which was insde up, substantialiy, of the present Counties of Simeoe, Grey and Bruce. _ Three candidaues " jumped up *‘ for the pusition : Hon. James Patton, Barrie; Hon John McMurrich, Merchant, Toronto ; Jas. Beattie, Pablisher of the *"Leader and Patriot,"‘ Toronto. _ Beattie got a majority in the division. It was in this election or about this time, the name " clear grit" originated as z;f- Klied to a political party, at least Mr {cPhee first heard it atthis time. Returning to the Hogan election : Hogan sat two sessions but when the third session came around bis place was empty, and had to remain so, as no Hogan could be forud, In the fail of 1860 his bodyâ€" was found in Toronto Bav, at the mouth of the Dun river. Morrison dropped out as candidate and Geo. Jackson steppeg‘ in his place, his opponents being Pardy and young Cowau. The election was early in Jaly and last ed two days as usual, Jackson winâ€" ning by 26 majority, the overcontidâ€" ence of Purdy and his friends owing to the large majority at the last election proving his undoing. The election was in January 1861 the House being then in session in Quebec. Fruit and Confectionei’y ‘"‘For some time the govyernment has been considering the question of assisting towns and villages to put in sanitary systems and Sir James Whitney would be quite justified in rendering assistance to the smaller municipalities. The question is one that has to be met and solyed by all the towns of the Province for the practice which has become prevalent in many places of using street drains as sewers is fast becoming a public _ _From time to time incidents of one kind or another suggest the necessity of a sanitary sewage system for towns and villages. _ One thousand, two thousand or more people cannot live congregated forever without danger of contamination or poliution from some source. We hope there is a ray of hops for Durham in the government aid suggested in the following item from an exchange : The Central Drug Store A Sanitary System.
