Last week, following a cuastom®o‘! thirteen years‘ standiog, the floral department of the Canadian Pacific Railway sent out over 2,000 separate packages of flower bulibs, each packâ€" age containing a selection of tulips, narcissus, byacintbs, iris, and lillies, making a total of half a million bulbs. These are planted somewhere in or around the station yards, and the competition amongst the agents as to who shall bave the prettiest yard is very keen. In the spring seed packâ€" ages are sent out, and last spring |ovcr 1,500 packets were distributed. iThe seeds and bulbs are entirely free, and are sent out to all the staâ€" | tion agents, section foremen, and | others who ask for them. In sendâ€" \ing them out the department makes | no stipnlations whatever as to . their use, each individual being left enâ€" tirely to his own initiative in the matter. The result has been to ¢eâ€" velop a remarkable love for flowers, and incidentally to beautify the C. P. R. stations in sach a manner as to attract universal commendation. That a great railway should consider the matter of beautitying its stations, and create a department of railway esthetics, and that this department should prosper as it has, is surely a matter for congratulation in these moneyâ€"making and â€" moneyâ€"loving days. It might be that if our cities and towns were to follow the examâ€" ple of the railway, they would, at a comparatively small cost, do very much more towards civic beauty than has hitherte been done. houd 1 1i 4. & 4 .06 4.0.6,dWecitct ied te of the opinion that the future of the Empire is black but that the Canâ€" adtans are " white." Wedonotfeel, however, quite so proad of our place in the color scheme, when we read that Sir Charles thinks that we could very well have sat still on this quesâ€" tion of defence, for we could shelter ourselves behind the Manroe Doctrine. The truth is that we could have done nothing of the sort. When Canadians depend tor their saftety on the Ameriâ€" can fleet, they will no longer be Canâ€" indians. They may keep the name ; but they will have lost the spirit, the independence and the liberty for which it stands. _ Uncle Samuel is not going to pay for our protection out of his own pocket without sending the billâ€"with interestâ€"to u8. We will pay it in cash or in Joss of autonomy. _ The price may, indeed, eventually be political union ; and, to begin with, it will be at least | political tutelage. â€"Mon. Star. RAILWAY ESTHETICS.
