Mulock at Underskirts REVIEW Canada‘s Winter Fair ice Carnivals is the great winter inâ€" stitution that annually meets in Guelph in December, under the ausâ€" pices of the Qutario government. â€" It is a bealtby institution, & robost °x: ample of the best in the Agricaltural life of the country, and maintains its interest by no midway glamour Of sideâ€"show speelers, or acrobatic perâ€" tormances but solely by the assembâ€" ling and exbibiting of the best proâ€" dvcts of the stable, the dairy, the poultry house and the soil. Away back ovyer 30 years ago, some of the breeders of Wellington Co.â€"theretore the best in the Provâ€" ince,â€"established on a small scale, a tat stock show, cattle only . _ Later it was made a Provincial Bhow and by and bye the government determine«a 1 io hold it at various provincial points. Guelph kept right on howeyer. and at last the itinerating idea was given uE ‘ aud the fat stock show at Guelp kept developing till its imporcante secured again government recognl tion. _ Eaily buildings proved tco simall, later and larger ones soon beâ€" came inadequate in turn and there were propusals to move it to a larger vcentre ;_but with the Agricultural Cuilege nearby, with the best stockâ€" men in Canada in the neighborhood, and above all, Guelph‘s priority in the enterprise, the advocates of moyvâ€" ing failed. The city went deeper inâ€" to its pocket and last year the Ontario goyernment assisted finâ€"ncially in he erection of a large additian to the existing buildings for in addition tu cattle, sheep, swine, poultry and seeds, this year horse men also were invited to exhibit. The result has baen that even yetthe buildings are too small for, about 10) borses had to be stabled in the city. Ailready plans are being spoken of tor **gre«ter than has been *‘ buildâ€" ings for 1910, and one wonders where they will place them. It is a great pity they were not originally piaced on the College tarm. * We can give only the very brietest mevtion of the features of this mamâ€" moth educational institation, for such ivis. The judging of horses and caitle is done in a large covered arena 150 or more feet long, and there is seating room around for hunâ€" dreds of spectators, to whom the juadâ€" ges give their reasons for decisions. Judging is no joke when 15 prime hackneys were lined up or an equal number of heayy Clydes, not ons of thom inferior. Then ncar by are lecture rooms, comtortably seated, where capable men expatiate on the points or charâ€" actâ€"ristics of the different breeds of Lurses, beeves, sheep or swine, the liviog animal being on the platform with the leciurer and questions are treely asked and answered. The Pouliry exhibit surpassed all records. _ Over 4500 entries of al. shapes and sizes ftrom the little banâ€" tam to the monster goose and turkey, their interm.oable racket no doubt waste to the ears of the poultry fanâ€" rer. In a room near by are hunâ€" dreds of quiet poultry, trassed up and iutractive, and tne exhibit shouid be A inmense vailgae to thuse who have w urcss dead low! for market. We were greatly surprisedâ€"and disappointed â€"to fird how common the barbarous praciice of docking bas become among horsemen. Out of nearly 300 entries we believe 5â€" sixths are thuas disfigared. Better than ice palaces, better than Nearly 150 entries ot cattle, many uf them ugly with fat gaye a delight all their own. ‘The cow stable was a great centre of intersst, and the prize winner of the week‘s test, a Holstein, was never without admirers _ Over every cow was displayed its records that of the winner being over 70 1bs of milk in a day which made 27 ibs. 3 z. butter in the test extending tor seven days. We were surprised to learn that over 80 per cent of the sows come from Oxford County. Nearly 500 entries of sheep and about half as muny of swine speaks to dimensions. â€" Not only are the livâ€" ing specimens jadged in the early days,â€"they are killed and dressed on the premises and one of the sights is the carcase room where hunudreds of careases hang cattle, swine and sheep, and are again jJudged tor meat excellerce. I+ would be easy to pointout some defecis in management, but these are receiving attention and we would urge all farmers to make up their minds that Guelph Winter Fair is a bad place to stay away from. 4t a public free meeting in the Ciry Hall on Wedmesday_evqninc able addre:ses were given by leadâ€" ing men, â€" Mimisters of Agricultare, &o., interspersed with music. A seed department on a large seale is aiso conducted, and we were more than pleased to see first prize for potatoes ca, ried off by David Hamilâ€" ton, of Egremont. _ Wm. Ramage had entries in Oats, Barley and Peas, but this year got only second standing in peas. _ There must have been some fine practical lessons from the addresses of the {udges who examâ€" ined the standing grain plots last summer. Te problem of accommodation is ever present in a city of Guelph‘s size. Thke hotels are not nearly aadâ€" equate, but good accommodation can be had in private homes through an accommodation bureau. Nearby is a building in which manufacturers display gas engines, litter carriers, fanning mills, washâ€" ing machines, &e., &e,, all farmers‘ needs. The whole atmosphere of the place breathes of agricultaural exâ€" cellence, and it is said that on many points even Chicago cannot approach it. Itis certain Chicago buyers and breeders are frequenting the place and making purchases. At a public free meeting in the P For Sale. ‘""A.
