Foster in Australia is much more consistent with his views as expressed in the Canadian Parliament in 1909 than is his leader, Mr. Borden. or the members of the present Government. bpeaking at Melbourne, Australia, on «+ Ourselves and the Empire‘‘ on May 2nd, last Hon. Mr, Foster dealt lightly | with the Canadiaa nayal discussion and proceeded " I congratulate Ausâ€" |tralia on her defence policy. She is setting a grand lesson to Janada" Australia‘s lesson to Canada is that without any political disunion she is setting about the construction of naval fleet units for her own waters, as she agreed to do at the Imperial Conference of 1909, and as was agreed and planned by the Laurier Government 1t is eyâ€" ident that Mr. Foster is able to be much more frank at the Antipodes than he dared to be in Ottawa since the Borden Government discarded previous naval agreements and laid Canada open to the charge of breaking faith with Australia and New Zealand. And ‘Liza Jane raised it to her mouth and solemnly went to work. But she seemed not entirely satisffed. At last she cut off a piece with a pair of scissors, and handed it to ‘Liza Jane. Evidently ‘Liza Jane was a very use ful person. She and the old lady came into a London shop and the old lady began examining some pieces of cheap calico. _ She pulled at one piece first this way, then that, wetting it and rubâ€" bing it with her fingers to try if the colors were fast. The going into effect of Local Option in Kincardine toâ€"day and the conseâ€" quent banishment of booze from the scenery there, leayes Waikerton and yvicinity standing out conspicuously as the wet territory on the map of Bruce How the county as a whole is drying up may be gathered from the fact that In 1874 there was issued in Bruce no less than 180 tavern and 20 shop licenâ€" ses, as against 214 tavern and no shop licenses for 1918, the last liquor store and the station hotel being doomed to shortly yanish from the landscape here, Of the 24 licenses that will thus be issned in the county for 1913 it is probably singular that 20 of these should be grauted for Walkerton and immediate vicinity, the liss being as follows; Walkerion 5, Carrick 7, Brant 4, and Greenock 4. That the Bruce Capital and every township surroundâ€" ing it should be wet whils almost all the rest of the county is dry, reveals one of the most remarkable situations in the Proviace.â€"Bruce Herald and Times, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. A copy can be had by applying to Mr D. Allan, Tp Clerk, or the same can be seen and read in our post office. We wish all our citizens would read this byâ€"law and govern themselves accordingly. Holstein readers, and all others as we‘ll, will appreciate the letter of Mr James Brown, who will return in a few days to the West, appearing on page 5 of this issue. A further conâ€" tribution is to appear next week, reâ€" lating chiefly to Panama and the wonderful canal. On Sunday last Rev‘s Malcolm ami Marshall exchanged pulpits The sermons _ were well received and highly spoken of by both congregaâ€" tions. _ There is a strong sentiment expressed by our citizens in favorof union between the two churches in this place, the present being a favorâ€" able time for such union, as both the present ministers expect to sever their connections with the individua congregations in a shortM wo :ld seem to bea wise a do as both men and money could be used to better advantage elsewhere., Mr. T.
