The above cut of the first editor of the Review appeared recently in th Toronto Star. Through the couriesy of the Star people we have secured it and publish herewith the story that accompanied it, believing that though it is a few weeks late it should be preserved in flles of the Review . 3 J oseph TOwnsend died lately on his brother‘s farm near Elora, There was the usual notice in the papers. The funeral was private, and there were few flowers, Theneighbors came and followed him to the cemetery. They referred to him as Joseph, though in=life be was *Jo." When the funeral was oyer they went back to the chores, and <the preparati is for another winter,. Passing of Famous Old Fossil Hunter Jo Townsend was one Of them and yet not of them,. This was his countryside; he was accustomed to them, and they to him. He had been at like funcrals himself, He bad heard like sermons, and like messages passed from lip to lip, in whispers. He knew, the buggies and the names of the horses that followed him,. He had leaned on the bearse many a time to talk to the undertaker, and yet, though be was of them he was not of them, he was not one of them: he was a fossil hunter. But none of his scientificfriends were there, ‘The men who ehared to a greater or less extent in the work Le bad dore in life, a strange work in the eyes of the countryside; a great work in the eyes of the scientists, who scarcely knew Jo Townsend well enough to go to his funeral. As he did not exactly belong to the countryâ€" side, neither did he belong to the world of the scientists, He was of them, but not like them. He v:ouldi not go as far into science as a trained geologist, and neither could be engage in the petty round of comfortable gossip which is life to the most of the world. He was a man apart, a man who was neither one thing nor the other, But not a. lonely. man. Far from it. He held daily converâ€" sations with buried ages, finding their messages in the skeletons of bugs or the prints of leaves caught in the layer between strata centuries ago. He dwelt in a world of fossils and hi lhfe work was with bammer and chisel delicately chipping them out of their graves and carting them lovingly home in a sagging pocket. Ax Oup NEwsrAPER Max. Forty years ago Jo Townsend was publishing newâ€"papers. First bhe was a printer in Elora, and then went into partnership with old Fisher Munro, a once well known newspaper man, in the publishing of the Orangeville Daily Advertiser, Then he founded the Dundalk Guide, and next the Darhan Review. As an editor he was a good man, Asabusiness man be did not succeed, ind even his editing was likely to be interrupted at unfortunate momentsâ€"unufortunate from the standâ€" point of the public which awaited the issue of the paperâ€"by his loye for féssilâ€"hunting. In the rocks at Elora he had made an early and accidental acquaintance with the strange things sometimes to be found between the layers of rocks. He hbad made a hobby of collecting these specimens, and studied them and their meaning, and read what few bngks he could find dealing with the subject, It is related of him that when he would disappear from his printing office up in Durham, aud the compositor needed him, the ".deyil " would be sent to the quarry to recall the editor to the needs of the moment. "Loolk here, son," the foreman would say, " hurry down to the quarry and find Jo. If he won‘t come bring the mail away, he probably‘s got it in his pocket and forgotten we need it, And son!
