One of the principal functions of the Chemical Division of the Domin ion Experimental Farms is to attempt the solution of problems connected with the maintenance and.upbtti1tiintr of soil fertility. Among the many valuable results so far obtained in these investigations is the demonstration of the vital part played by lime in the increase of a troil'a productiveness. The subject is treated in an inter. esting and practical way in Bulletin No. 30 of the Experimental Farms' regular series, by the Dominion Chemist, Dr. Frank T. Shut, who discusses it under the following heads ', The nature of lime and lime stone The agricultural functions of lime and its compounds. NORTH-EAST NORMA NBY Comparative value of lime com- pounds. The application of lime compounds. The use and misuse of lime. Those interested may obtain a copy of this bulletin by applying to the Publications Branch, Department of Agriculture. Ottawa. On Tuesday morning, 13th April, 1915, Mr Jas. Veasie. long well-known on the 2nd Con. of Bgremont, died at the home of his son John, who for some time has been staying with him, after only two days' illness. Always a healthy man the machinery of life seemed just to wear out. He had reached the great age of 91 years. 9 mos., 13 days and sur- 1vived his wife by 19 years, to whom he l was married about 60 years ago. Me Vessic was born in Edinburgh, and at 12 years of age came to Gait with his parents and on the Grand River a few miles out he passed his youth. Here he was married and shortly after‘ moved with his young wife to the Pals ley block and was there 8 years. From i there the next move was to Durham, where he teamed merchandise for 3 yrs. from o. Sound to Guelph. ln the 60'g of last century we find him on the 2nd Con. of Egremont, a fairly successful farmer, with an enthusiasm for bees and jeeaeeping. After his wife died, he l went to live with his daughter, Mrs Da- vid Etwles and later has been living on Robt. Main’s place. To the couple now gone were born 3 sons and 4 daughters, John, already mentioned, Thos. in Duluth and James in California, Esther, Mrs Eccles and Jane, Mrs Lewis, are near by. Other two daughters died some years ago. Mr Veggie was a man of more than average intelligence, was a member of the Baptist church and intensely Liber. al in politics. He is to be buried on Thursday in Maplewood cemetery, Rev. Mr Wylie conducting the service . 4th--Total 675.
