Those spending the holiday out of * town are : â€"Mr and Mrs Milier, Mr 9&' and Mrs Bowes and baby, Miss Lowe ce Nicholls and Miss Jean Buckbam. Miss Margare McKinnon daughter of Lauchie McKinoon of Lanogdon, Alta, arrived trom the west on Satâ€" urday to visit her relacsives here and in Darbam. Pte Hector McDonald of the 168th Bao is home on leaye. A cablegram was received ai the Post Office, on Dec 21s. ftrom the three McKinnon boys wishiag all "A Merry Christmas,‘‘ Donald evidently being on leave ftrom rrance. Anotber Sundav Scehool Anniverâ€" sary has passed and if anything with more than usual success in naumbers and ffeances, the latter amounting to over sixty dollars. Avery lengthy program was rendered nng it w}?s 12 UR LE 2 blte s seeccwrs Aimeuinsatenst Ee m on o ces Pn e s 1 r m before the gifts were distributed rom the tree. Without discriminatâ€" ing on the merits of one more than another, we must refer to the Dromore eboir, "Thy Wildwood Home‘" begin especially flae. Oshers we might say "‘protessionals," who rendered very fine music were Mrs Herman McLean and air and Mrs Bowes. Miss Nicholls and Mr Miller, as was easily seen, spared no time nor pains in training the school children in their different performances, Miss Jane Wright alâ€" so gave valuable assistance in preâ€" paring the program, Rev. Conn of Markdale, formerly preacher of Mathâ€" eson Ont, was the speaker of the eveâ€" ning and the time was all too short tor what he could relate of the awâ€" fulfre in New Ootario. One outâ€" 'unglnk feature is that not one perâ€" ished in Matheson where Mr Coon valiantly assisted in the rescue of the helpless. PRICEVILLE VILLAGE Special Reduction Before another issue of the Reyiew is out the year 1916 will be numberâ€" ed with the past, This week finde it in the throes of death, no human aid can prolong its exiscence. its course is neatly run, the bowling of the winds from the east as we are writing this Saturdav night is an indication that the messenger of time is near at hand. No preparations are necessâ€" ary for its burial ; there is enough room in the old cemetery where the many thousands of years are buried, for the year 1916 to be laid to reat. In reviewing the yeer tha; is now fast drawing to a close there are many remembrances to be drawn therefrom and its a immatter of fact that canneot be enumerated, all the difficulties and adversities and prosperities that we associated with its career since it came in 12 mos ago. _ At the beginâ€" ning of 1916 many gaye a look as with a spying glass to the end of the year expecting that they would enjoy the Xmas of 1916 as well as Xmas of a year ago. But how many a home has been blighred since that time. ‘The clouds of disappointment overâ€" shadowed many a comfortable home and this Xmas morning finds thousâ€" ands of homes with gloom cast over them on account of so many ef our brave young boys who so faithfully stood and faced the battles which are raging at the present time till they fell and died a bhero‘s death. and pains be wonders what a chang© one year made on his activity. Now Ims steps are feevle when a few years ago he could walk with ease but now be finds it a difficult task to walk from h s bed to his clair, We go back again and look at the little babe which lay in its cradle one year ago only a few months old. This Xmas its ranning from one place to another through the house and is the pride of father and motber, _ So in draw ng a comparison from the litcle babs of a year ago and the aged perâ€" son so thke babe grew strong and ac.â€" tive and ruuning abou, while the old and iofirm pilgrim went as fast down the grade of life as did the babe the upgrade. The story of the Professor who overheard pedestrians on the other side of the street will be remembered when they made the remark "there goes old professor so and so on the other side." The old professor neyer thought that he was getting old ull he oyerbeard the remark from the other side of the street. _ Bo a great number of the aged do not like to be called old. _ Those youngsters that look at the aged with disrespect, may be sometime before the closing ot the century th mselves called old Jonathan or Isauc by those yet unborn. The closing of the year brings to the memory of the aged pilgrim the many Christmasses and New Years he saw since he came to this cold world and now as he is drawing fast to the close of his sarthly journey he will be apt to give expression to the true words that he was once young and now old but never forsaken ana now as he stands trembling with aches This is Xmas night 1916 and as we write our thoughts fly backward to the manner Xmas was spaent some 50 or 60 yeare ago,. _ The horny oxen was considered a good team with the conveyance being a large homemade sleigh and would be loaded with a large family going to spend Xmas with some friends at a distance, On arriving after going zig zag through » bush road they were cheerfully en. tortaiaed by their fmends who had all the good things of that far away age in readiness to appease the hunâ€" gry travellers who came for miles to partake of the strong and nourishing food which in general consisted of a large por of the old fashioned "cup potatoes‘‘ and a big pile of bannocks made on the old fashioned frying pan held to the coals in tha old fireplace to what was called a "panboy," gome will remember what sort of a boy the panboy was, It was an invention made wich nicks in it some 4 ft bigh to put the handle of the frying pan on to suit the cook so as not to let the contents butn too fast. 1t Dr‘s Lane or McLean were orâ€" dained physicians in Priceville some 60 years ago, starvation would stare them in the face for nabody was getâ€" iung sick unless some thirsty fellow took too much of the contents of the cup . The Sunjay School auniversary held in the Presbyterian church on 21at Dec. was quite a suecess as alâ€" ways. _ The ladies are never behind in doing their share of the program by providing good eatables. We ex. pect tae Priceville corr, will be givâ€" ing a good account of the proce=dâ€" imngs so we will only give a short aynâ€" opsis of the program which consiet~d of dialogues and recitation, singing by Dromore choir with Wm Ramage as leader, a grand address by KHev M» Conu of Markdale on his experience of[ the recent fires up in New Ontario. Rev Mr Matheson was chairman and the proceeds amounted to $58. * Rev. Mr Matheson will be qway at Caledon neszt Sunday preaching anâ€" niversary services for his old congre. gation there. _ Rev Mr. Stevenson, formerly of Bhelburne will take Mr. Matheson‘s place on Bunday, Pte Heotor McDonald of the 19§th Buffs spent a few days ag his old bome, & L, Glenelg and will be going back on Wednesday, 27b inst, Miss I4ia McCuaig who spent the last two or three years in the west came bome a few days ago and will remain at home now for Â¥ome time. Hanover Buy Farm Surgeonâ€"General Roberts, oMcer commanding the University of Toâ€" ronto Base Hospital, bas written the following letter to Dr. C. K. Clarke, Dean of the Varsity Medical Faculty: Varsity Base Unit Will Become a Hut ‘"‘There is one bright aspect to the present conditions and that is this: the authorities have decided to make this a hut hospital, The Engineerâ€" ing Department has surveyed the grounds for the huis and are sending a working party out to put in the permanent foundation immediately; ihe buts themselves are being shipâ€" ped bere in sections, and I underâ€" stand are due to arrive at any time, The Director of Works promised me two days ago, that be could have all the buildings erected within one month after the arrival of the paris, but I think that this is a promise which it vill o pretty difficult for him to realize if I can jJudge from the speed with which a good many of their other enterprises are carried out,. _ However, if they will put up the ones most immediately needed, according to our direction, we can worry along then without bolding them to the time limit of a month, This state of affairs will be a groat hboon to all of us, and will make life worth living, especially for my nursâ€" ing sisters. Elt <t $ Use SCOTTS /. Refuse Substit‘ss "As soon as I knew that I could look after the nurses I asked the general to send them along. Sixâ€" teen of them arrived about ten days ago, and the remainder on Tuesday last. They are in excellent health, with the exception of one or two who are bad sailors, and show the effects of a rough passage which they bad from Malta, They at once went on duty in the wards, and, believe ms, it was a joy to have them. The men are all right in their place, but I am firmly convinced that their place is not in the wards looking after sick men, _ No one can do that like the nurses. We have them bhoused in big Indian pattern tents with double walls, each of which accommodates four very nicely, and they all seem to be very comfortable and contented. Everyone is pitching into the work 2s though their lives depended upon it, and they are certainly looking after all the men who come in in a way that I am sure would compare favorâ€" ably with your standard in the T. G. H. At any rate we are doing everyâ€" thing under the sun that we can for everyone who comes in, and trying to send them out better if possible, and, if not happy, contented and satâ€" isfied that we have done everything that lies in our power for them. o "Our greatest need at the present time is an adequate water supply, At present everything is delivered in waterâ€"carts and bhas to be hauled from a well about three miles away. This means that the supply is always limited and sometimes we are decidâ€" edly short. We are chlorinating and boiling all that we use and, believe me, I do not know what the real taste of food is now.
