I Many of us are quite capable of seeing T through this wonderful rush to gain rein. i forcements for our troops, gotten up so _ late in the day and just before the election. l Why all this activity now ? We all knew ' months ago just what we are hearing so much hurrah about to-day. If Sir Wilfrid Lender's suggestion had been carried out ! as soon as made, and a referendum taken, i ( we might have. been twice as far ahead‘ as we are now, for there is no doubt what- ever that a referendum properly taken I would have resulted in a vote for cppscrip. tion, and conscription then would have What a Soldier’s Sister Thinks To judge from the Toronto press. which continues to report only one ride. the Government stumpera con- tinue to our] alt before than. That. conclusion we drew from the decree which nieel ell Illonncee of coldierc' women. The goycmment of best minds is evidently in distress. It in making its tight in ontario, where the Premier and Menu Foater, Guthrie, Mewbum and Rowen have been stumping day and night. Following the 'dtoeti ot I week. or more :30 to.plyuus the term. Gait P. o., Nov. y The man who filches money from an- other's pockets, or the public, the Gov.. eminent, or anywhere, to spend in charity or for patriotic purposes, is a humbug, and the Union party, for it is a party and as partisan as it ever was under its older and proper title. has too many such wol- ves in sheep's clothing to deserve the votes of the aoldier'ts relatives. We sisters and mothers are only too well aware that some of the worst slackers are not in civilian clothes, but swaggering in khaki at a safe distance from the scene of battle, holding soft, sate and lucrative positions either in England or even here _ in Canada. What about the stool pigeons who led our boys to England, and then, when they had seen them off to the danger acne. came creeping back to Canada to draw salaries in different branches at the "service," while our lads are enduring everything at the front ? We know too many "Liberal conscriptions,“ who have no one there, but whose sons are safely, for the time being, tucked away on fruit farms or in munition works. We know also too many Union candidates who i have been smirched with the graft brush, Convinced with shoe contracts or other cherries whereby their pockets have been filled at the expense of the people of Can- ada and our soldiers. Our boys went under the voluntary sys- ' tem, and had this system been given a , fair trial all over Canada, as it was not, I and if our Government had kept faith with our boys as it did not do, plenty ot l men would have risen to fill their places. Those of us who have lost relatives in this war, while others who enlisted at the same time have never smelt smoke, and _ who have seen fortunes made out of the war by these same Unionists who prate of tsacrifice and loyalty, do not wonder at the present situation. The Toronto Globe I has a new set of moral standards, evident- 1 ly. Sir Joseph Flavelle, the saintly Sun. day school superin tendent. must not be criticized until we see how ' liberal" he may be in his expenditure of his ill-gotten been the people's institution. As if. is, I some of Gen. Mewburn's statements will I bear sifting, to say at least. Between the general and Sir Robert Borden it is very plain that we are now tobave just enough conscription to win the election, and not enough to offend or inconvenience too many people. Is the war tobeover as soon as this 100,000, or 25,000, or 10,000, reach England ? Or who is to reinforce them when they in turn need support? The Mewburn-Borden story indicates that only the first class is likely to be needed.
