The pastor asked all to rise and sing *"Praise God ftrom whom all blessings flow." Thus ended the $9000 document. THE SPLENDID LECTURE preacher, who got his primary education ‘ at or near Pai,ley. in Co. Bruce, and is related to Mré Jno. Nichol, Mr J A. Graham and poseibly others in‘ Durham. This was Mr. MacNeill‘s first visit to Durham as a lecturer,â€" and those who heard him on Monday, sincerely hope it won‘t be his last. _ His subject was ‘"Naâ€" poleon Bonaparte‘"" and for excellence of delivery, graphic descnption'.-and knowâ€" {kdge of his subject, it must rank as the best lecture ever given in Durham. It was fascinating, portions of it ""gripped" the audience toa spellâ€"bound silence, lwhile its patriotic touches elicited rapâ€" | turous applause. f Another cause for rejoicing was the presence ot Rev. John MacNeill, B. A, D. D., who has a nationâ€"wide fame s a Fefore that audience was placed a word picture of the great Emperor, that will long remain vivid. The analysis of hip character as his great desire for worldâ€" power, developed by notable victories, was superb. He traced his early camâ€" paigns. by which continental Europe was at his feet, and great applause was given to his statement that only one pbwer. and that Great Britain, eluded his masterful sway, The campaigns in Spain, and in ) Egypt undertaken to oripple Britain‘s power, were among his mistakes, as was that against Russia which cost him 400â€" 000 men, â€" He lost color by these failures and was sent to Elba and his dramatic escape and return to France, which rousâ€" ed all Europe was one of his best pictures, but his masterpiece was his description of the battie of Waterloo, which he had studied on the spot . . We leave it at that® The sad story of Josephine, his cruel treatment of her. his arrogant assumption o6 power as First Consul, and later crownâ€" ing himself as Emperor thougb he asked the Pope to be present ~were all pictured. His down fall at Waterloo, his surrender to the British. the dark days at St. Helâ€" ena, and his death in the midst of an unâ€" wonted tropical storm were given in viv" id touches. * NOTES s He thinks the ex Kaiser a mere puppet in comparison with Napoleon, though he aimed like him, at World power. _Ngpolâ€" eon lost the moral support 6t ‘Europe Py" his treatment of ‘Josephine, the Kaiser lost the moral sypport of the world by the murders Ofâ€"tRe. Lusitania, Edith Cavell and Capt. Fryatt, whith " led "even the United States to entemar." notice the sarcasm implied in the "even?"‘ His reference to the great war minister Pitt who kept Britain steady amid all the convulsions attending Napoleon‘s career, was paralleled he said in the late war, by a little Welshman, sprung from the people known as Lloyd George, which brought down the house, The charge of the Seots Greys at Watâ€" erloo, when at a ‘critical moment they rode to death and glory with cries of "Scotland yet,‘ was another climax that brought applause. â€" Still another when it was shown how the Egyptian campaign was frustrated by Nelson at the Nile. The downfall began at Trafaigar not Watérloo. y3 ; C The lecturéer did justice to Napoleon for studying the arts of peace. Hefgstered education, built public works, made a code of National justice, encouraged good roads, and did many things that showed greatness apart (from war. His parents were humble people, his only son died young. he stands out alone as a meteor flash upon humanity, who was arrogant enough to, say, "A man of my calibre cannot commit ctfin&s. Revd‘s Hardy & Cole and Mr Thos. Allan, conveyed the greetings of the Angâ€" lican, Methodict and Presbyterian bodies respectively»> The firstâ€"named made a strong plea on the necessity of church leadership. THE DUBHAM REVIEN The music on Monday night was of a high order and was enjoyed by the large audience present. _ Miss Leah McComb was accompanist to an anthem by the choir, a duett rendered by Mesdames Abraham and Griff and a quartette by Miss Janie McLean, Mrs F. Giles, Messt‘s Giles and Bloor. Mr Kirkconnel, a visitor, favored the audience with two splendid solos. In loving memory of Pte. Donald Roy Galbraith who was killed in action on Oct. Another Prosecution for Fish. ing in Eugenia Hydro Dam The Flesherton Advance says ; A Magistrate‘s case which attracted a great deal of attention was tried before James McMullen J. P. in the town hail on Saturday evening when two of our citizens, Messrs W. W. Trimble and H. Carrington were charged with fishing out at the hydro ‘dam recently. Three or four weeks ago these gentlemen went out to the 8th line on a Saturday evenâ€" ing to fish and this trial was the result, Both gentlemen swore that they did not fish after 12 o‘clock, but a man named Duraut swore that he saw Trimble‘s line in the water at 3 a m. Mr Durant must have remarkably keen eyes in his headâ€" sort of night glasses. _ A line cannot be seen in the water after dark, according to our experience. _ The fexplanation of why they were there at that early hou! was a series of mishaps, including a lost fishing pole, a broken buggy and explodâ€" ing lantern. _ As there was no evidence that Mr Carrington was fishing his case was dismissed, but Magistrate jMcMulâ€" len accepted the evidence of the man Durant as against that of Postmaster Trimble and recorded a conviction. *W, H. Wright who acted for the defendants immediately gave notice of appeal. Co. Crown Attorney Dyre prosecuted. Puorgau, Sept. 30, 1980] Hogs, live, f o b.....
