Sound, are visiting Mrs Mino‘s brother‘s here, Messrs David and Arch B. McDonald. Mr Mino left on the eveningtrain, Monâ€" day, Aug 1, while Mrs Mino will wait for another week seeing old friends and acquaintances of her youthful days. Another heavy thunderstorm on Satâ€" urday night, the worst of the season and hail in some parts. Sunday was cooler and instead of puffing with the heat, overcoats were not too uncomforâ€" table for moterists. Arch. D. McKinnon, S. Glenelg, had his barn struck by lightning during the severe thunder storms of last week and escaped with the tearing down of some rafters and a corner post partly into slivers. â€" Duncan »and Geo Moore had two cows killed the same night by lightâ€" ning and others report to have small damages done to their dwellings. The first item in our last week‘s budâ€" get was misleading by a misunderstanâ€" ding on our part in stating that the Rev Mr Conn of Markdale, was to be the preacher last Sunday. It was a lady, Miss Manary, of Markdale, who gave an address on missionary work in forâ€", eign countries. However a crowded house was in attendance, whether with the expectation of hearing Mr Conn or not they were not disappointed. We hope to hear Mr Conn on some future occasion and will be more carefulin our assurance that he is to be there. Mr John L. McDonald ‘zave the preâ€" liminary services ably at Miss Manary‘s service last Sunday. We are pleased to hear that those having diphtheria down the Durham Road, Glenelg, are getting better. The Walkerton old boys and girls reunion" held last week was a gieat success, a "monster" one says the Times. There were about 10000 present on their biggest day. From Saturday to Satâ€" urday the week was full of varied funcâ€" tions. The churches on Sunday were filled with old timers, a private benefacâ€" thon to the town of Cemetery Memorial gates by daughter and grandaughters of pioneers of Brant was formally presentâ€" ed tothe Mayor. Another day aSoldier‘s Monument was unveiled containing 47 names of Walkerton boys who fell in the war. There were parades, ball games fire works, a jazz band and a beautifully decorated town done by a Peterborough firm. The finely paved streets came in for much admiration, and much else that betokened a harmonious working town. Wonder could Durham not invite its old boys and girls for such a week and make preparations in time to show off the old time at its best ? It has been on the map longer than Walkerton and many old timers would be glad of such an ocâ€" casion to draw them all together. The changes that have been made in the high school courses of study as a result of the study given the matters here by special committee on high school ‘ education have been announced by Hon. R H. Grant, and are being communicated to school boards. principals and others affected. The changes are so important as to affect a revolution in high school education and to give the high and conâ€" tinuation schools anentirely new status in the educational system of the province. Briefly, the aim of the department has been to provide a five year course of training that will be an end in itself inâ€" tead of a step either to university or Normal school work. _ Hitherto the training given in the schools has had either or both of these as an objective and the student who wished to round off his education by a high school course was obliged to take all the subjects reâ€" quired for university or Normal school matriculation. Under the new system matriculation is still provided for, but by the adoption of the optional system, applied to all but a few subjects, the student can take the instruction he wants.
