Eatliest Settlers in Priceville Locality Contrmtuttrtiotus to Mr and Mrs Mt O'Neil on the birth ot a son. Prom an old mend, Mr John A. McDonald, we have received the fol- lowlng sketch ot Pricevllle's earliest days. It Is as follows: At your request, 1 am sending you names of the original settlers in Pricevllle. lst. the name was tak- en from the surveyor Price who sur- veyed the Durham Road in the year 18nt and on halting at the now vil- lage, the name Pricevlile was pro. posed by the tew in the locality. The original Priceville was on Glenelg side. now called the 'Highland Hou'. Two hotels or whiskey shops were early estttttiitshed there. one kept by the late Donald McLean and anotie er by the late John McCulloch. in the early 60’s. . When I was a boy i remember the late John Kennedy who worked tor McCulloch., bringing a. wagon load ot whiskey about the you 1865. and the contents lasted only a month or two I. The nettle'ra then thought it incumbent upon them to patronize the proprietor by taking home ajug- ful ot the palatable stun which was only li0e a gal. An old highlander man said "By gosh it's soot stuff Me Culloch keeps." Another old Highlander kept what was called a store at that time, by the name of McQuarrie and was asked how ho kept his books as he had no education. He said "the wife. has P good memory and she rememr hers all she sells." How would that suit the merchants nowadays? Well now, lets go over the big hill east of the Highland Hills and there I find the first citizen in the nrw village as Mrs John McAuley, who put up the first log cabin on the Durham Road on Artemesia side. A. way down east where Frank Reilly's shop stands, was it Dan McDonald. who put up the other log house. Down further the late Sager Tryon started a hotel about 1855 and the late Wm. Purdy put up a smallatore at the foot of tho hill in 1853 which was a great convenience to the new settlers in getting tea, tobacco. soda, soap and other mull oracles. The late E. B. McMillan kept hotel as early as 1865, followed by Kennedy Bros. for awhile. Peter Beverage put up the tannery. later nm by C. C. James and now tho property of the Misses James. Dr. Ghent, Dr Burns, Dr Bennet were early medicos: Chas MeMil1tut,p1atr terer: Dougaid McLean, shoemaker; Matthew, Thos., Robert and Wm. Conkey. the latter yet living in Pets gus: Alex Ferguson, agent; Pratt, cis Waite. blacksmith: Alex Web. ster. merchant: John Simpson, cab inet maker: R. H. Evans, carriage maker: Ferguson Wright, teacher: Alex McNeil. retired farmer (father of Dr. McNeil. Chicage, who made a present ot the McNeil cemetery at the town line): Wm McDonald, ro- tired farmer: Duncan McFayden. a shoemaker: G. Yeomsns, merchant: J. H. Yeomans. merchant '. Robert and John Hall, merchants: Joseph Dixon, merchant: Wm Pertrmson, aup. erintendent of schools and who kept I the Post Oftiee on the hills called ' Artemesla for a time: and others, were community builders of the 50's. All these are the original citizens who have pass“ away may years ago with the exception of Wm Cank- ey. who is yet living in Fergus. Another hotel was where the Pres. byterian manna now tstands-t forget tho man'u name. The late John Mc- Donald put up the tirst grist mill in 1857 and was a. great convenience. Cyril Vnudner. big Donald McDonald. Edward McDonald and little Donald McDonnld (Mrs J. H. Hunter's bro- ther) were prominent in these early days. Mrs Chas Wale spent a few days in Toronto last week. Mrs A. Thedorf visited 'her (laugh ter, Mrs Robt Stewm who is under the Dr's care with nervous trouble. Mr Thos Walton has exchanged his old car for a line new 'sur' model. Sympathy is extended to Mull Gillies and Mrs Hector Ink in the death of their mother, In Wright. who passed “my Sunday an. utter a long illness. Mel-ti Weed” to Ventry. Rev. Spencer. MeClocklin brought up the question ot tire protection. He stated in his corner of the town there was no tank or engine stand in case ot, tire. Conn. Noble suggested that the" bridge on Kincardine St. South over; creek (south of John Mekeehnie's; residence) was in bad condition, and it a good covering was built thereon.| it would then be passable tor tmftie and serve as , engine stand. Conn. McLean also c imed no tank or pro- tection at the south end of the town. Conn. Noble said it would be a big proposition to place a tank there, butt better protection should be devised.l On Mayor Murdoch's suggestion the‘ Fire and Light Com. are to bring inn} definite report ot work .to be under.) taken at next meeting.
