With the church were also dedicatâ€" ed the following, the gifts of memâ€" bers of the congregation : The magnificent communion table by Mrs. J. P. Hunter; beautiful siiver communion plates by Mr and Mrs J. H. Harding ; individual communion service purchased by the congregaâ€" tion and the beautiful baptismal bowl by Mrs McDonald, Chatsworth. Thanks were expressed for these gifts and also for pedestals donated by Mr Jno. Morrison ; Pulpit lamp by Mrs Adam Weir ; jardineres by Dr. and Mrs. Pickering, and other giits. including memorial windows. The thanks of the minister and congregation are extended to all who have contributed to making tnese op ening and dedicatory services a sucâ€" cess. We acknowledge with deep apâ€" preciation the excellent services renâ€" dered by those from (Owen Sounu, W ‘kerton and Dunnville, who have been very generous in rendering special musical selections at this 1 V scknowledge with thanks the beautiful floral decorations most generously donated by Mr Flett of Mt. Forest. A prayer by Rev. Strachan, Owen Sound, followed the dedication and atter musical numbers, Rev. Mr Kanâ€" niwan chose for his text Matt. 16:18, "Upon this rock will 1 build my church." In a clear and convincing sermon, he proclaimed our Saviour would be satisfied with no other conâ€" fession from us than that of Peter, and out of rock material like him, who have made a similar confess:on,. the Christian church has ‘been built up and outspread. Its strength de pends entirely upon the life, characâ€" er and stability of its membership. The greetings of Bruce Presbytery were conveyed by Rev. R.G. NcKay, Walkerton, and of Saugeen, by Rev. John McKenzie the moderator. 5 EVENING SERVICE At the evening service Rev. Nr. Kanniwan‘s text was from John 1 :43 "Follow me" which he termed Jesus‘ challenge to the young people of toâ€" day. He was speaking particularly to young folks and none who reâ€" sponded to the call ever regretted it. In this call were four great chat lengesâ€"of a great personality â€"of a great program, to a great service and to a great sacrifice and we regret space forbids a full report of his forceful presentation of these chal lenges. His message will long reâ€" main with young and old who crowâ€" ed every available space in churea and entrances. The best of sacred music was rerâ€" dered by the choir at all services and by Messrs Boorman, tenor and Kelâ€" lough, basso, of 0. Sound, in solos and duets afternoon and evening. An additional fine number in the evening was the duet by Mrs W. Buchan and Mr R. Smithers of Dunnville. MONDAY EVENING The Monday evening tea and socâ€" lal function was a worthy successor to the Sunday gatherings. The baseâ€" ment at 6 p.m. was a busy scene and the tempting baking on laden tables, with the aid of willing assistâ€" ants, found expression in social feiâ€" lowship that always accompany reâ€" freshments. This part of the evenâ€" ing program over, the gathering \reâ€" paired to the auditorium of the church, where the literary and mus;â€" cal senses were also to be satisfied. Many musical friends of the consreâ€" The Cash Shoe Store Phone 4%, Durham 3.95 2.50 1.50 1.25 1.25 gation from outside points assiste! for this occasion and these were the Male Quartette, Mrs Rowand and Miss Scott from Walkerton, and Mis. W. Buchan and Mr R. Smithers from Dunnville. This talent with the choir filled in between the many s..ort speeches from the various pastors present and that all were appreciatea is not necessary to add. As on Sunâ€" day, the choir of the church, were in splendid form and showed the time spent in rehearsal. To Mrs Laucer, organist, goes much crodit for the manner in which she accompaniea the various choral or solo numwers, for on historical days, as these are, the situation is not as easy at it apâ€" pears on the surface. There were no fewer than eimi clerical brethren to assist Rev. [i~. Armstrong, who was the chairman 0/ the evening. We regret that for lack of space, our notes on the commenis of these clergy, cannot be used beâ€" yond the fact that all were congraiuâ€" latory in their words for the new edifice. _ The speakers were mtev. .. E. Peters, Durham ; Rev. Sinclair, ci Tiverton ; Rev. R. B. Ledingham, of Harriston ; Rev. Chas McDonald, of Lucknow ; Rev. W. Johnston, Hoi stein ; Rev. Pollock, Whitechurou ; Rev. McKay, Walkerton : Rev or. Kanniwan, Toronto.‘ lHow can the twoâ€"fold purpose of this day best be fulfilled ? We can give honor to those in the home who carry the burden of responsibiliiy, and especially to the mothers, who by their patience, thelr endgurance, | their loyalty and self sacrificing serâ€" vice, are helping to make earth "a | little bit of heaven.‘ We can encour age by our interest and presence in | the Sunday School, the teachers and !om(-ers, who are giving unselfishiy | of their time and effort to help poys \ and girls to more abundant Christian | living. We can join with our child ren and young people in the special services in _ church and Sabbath School and resolve to put our influâ€" ence behind this work in our own | community and throughout the Provâ€" . ince of Ontario. The latter gave the address of the evening, on "The Assets of Canada." but before doing so, took occasion to refer to his pleasure at again meeiâ€" ing one of his former elders in Hamâ€" ilton, Mr Donald Simpson (father of Mrs Moore McFadden), now im imâ€" paired health. His new work in the church as Sec‘y of the Young Leoâ€" ple‘s Organization and Extension program ~of the church, fills a large place in his heart and in his traveis incidental to his position, has ma:.; facilities for noting the vast resou~ ces of Canada that are as yet or.:/ tapped. He would rather that Canaâ€" da become famous as a land where democracy, justice, integrity and fair Play held sway to that of her being broadcasted as a land of wealth and not possessing the foregoing princ.â€" ples. In this Canada there are four religious institutions of great imporiâ€" ance, viz : ‘Home,‘ ‘School, ‘Church‘ and the ‘Sabbath Day.‘ But there is something greater than these, tae speaker stressed. We have coming to our shores peoples of many lands an« it is to the Christian citizens of Canâ€" ada toâ€"day to take them in and make them her own. The greatest asset of toâ€"day is her young people and is there a better field of activity than to spend our spare time in developâ€" ing these young people along proper channels. Good seed, soil and cultivaâ€" tion are necessary to good farmingâ€" and the proper environment is just as essential for a human harvest. Dr. Kanniwan‘s address was listenâ€" ed io .« ‘a great pleasure by tnose present und that his services of sunâ€" day and Monday have left an impre»> sion on the minds of his hearers, there can be no doubt. A special program entitled "Cou'1~' try, Home and Mother‘, has been prp-’ pared for use in the Sunday Schools‘ on that day and is provided wmlom' cost by the Ontario Religious Educaâ€"| | tion Council. This is the interdenomâ€" inational Sunday School organization| for our Province and is responsivie | | for the promotion and leadership of | 200 Conventions, 20 Boys‘ camps, Girls‘ camps, 4 Summer Leadersnlp’ Schools and 39 Standard Training Schools held during the year in va: ! | fous parts of the Province. The tass.| | is too great for any denomination :o | accomplish alone, and this coâ€"opersâ€" | tive program ~in which the various denominations are interested, calis | for the loyal and generous suppor: ; of all who are concerned with iue ! moral and religious welfare of our ‘ boys and girls. A How much does the communiiy owe to the Sunday School ? What would be the moral and religtous conditicns if the community were deâ€" prived of this agency for the developâ€" ment and training of Christian char acter? It has been pointed out uy leading statesmen of the past and present, that our present civilization can stand only as it resis upon strong moral and religious founsiaâ€" tions. Secular education must be reâ€" inforced by religious education, if we are to havye Christian character and Christian conduct. This is the task and responsibility of the home and church, and requires the wholeâ€" hearted coâ€"operation of parents and teachers to secure a united effort in the interests of childhood and youth. GO TO SUNDAY SCHOOL DAY, SUNDAY MAY 5 In order to draw special attention to the place and importance of the Sunday School, and the part it plays in the building of character, a day is set apart once a year throughout Canada and called _ ‘Goâ€"ToSundayâ€" School Day. It is held on the Snd Sunday of May, which falls this year on May 8th, and takes the form of a rally of all, both young and old, to join in the work of the Sunzay School, and to give it their enthusiâ€" astic support. Since this is also 0w served as Mother‘s Day, it therefore serves a twoâ€"fold purpose. The receipts of the two days sei vices amounted to around $450.00. Mr and Mrs Andrew Haste actour panied by Mrs Arch. Brown, attend»d the dedication ~service in the new Presbyterian Church, Durham, last Sunday. They were the guests of lLir and Mrs J. McKechnie and fami‘y during the afternoon. A contest closed the mecting : Lirs Geo. Hastie and Miss Edna Bierâ€" worth won the prize given for mos: points obtained for both parts of the contest. Miss Mary Morrison returned to Toronto on Monday â€"after spending two weeks‘ vacation at her home. The Presbyterisn church services were withdrawn on Sunday on acâ€" count of the Dedication Services :i Durham. Many took the opportunity to attend these services, which they enjoyed very much. The supperand programme on Monday evening was also splendid. Misses Hattie and Myrtle Mortley visited with Mr and Mrs Bob Mort ley last week. We are pleased to see all those who have been sick with the cold and ‘flu‘ able to be around again. Quite a number from this part went to Durham on May 1st to attend the dedication of the new Presbyter:an Church. If the immense crowd that were presentâ€"enough to fill two churches â€" were an indication o" Presbyterianism, there will be no chance of that creed passing out for some time in Grey Co. The overflow of people were invited to the Bapâ€" tist TChurch a few steps farther where Rev. W. Johnston, Holstein, deliverâ€" ed an appreciative discourse to a full church. Rev. Dr. Kanniwan, Toronto, spoke a few words. A solo and duet followed, making the audience think they had not been neglected by the good people of the new church.
