DUNDALK NOMINATIONS ii1ilitt iiti) tttttttig tilttriitit1 He suggested our high tax rate is the result ot injudicicus economy in public works, such as building ot the Queen St wall, Lambton and Gar-a St. bridges and retaining walls, where when these gave way later, entailed double expense. O. S. Hunter suggested our paving estimate of $70,000 is approximate. It may be $100,000. He favored pun ing, but would tirgt let people decide two years, had been caused by H. S. Board asking reduced levy from town, to use up a $8000 surplus. The Province and County were paying 1% times as much as Town to support of High School. Dr J. P. Grant, in a forceful au, dress. appreciated the opportunity of presenting school affairs before rate- payers. He explained the High Sch- ool Board's deficit this year, show- Ing that lowered tax rate the past sea. and tax collector had not col- lected nearly all dog and poll taxes. They allowed some dogs to run at large, while others had to be tied. He then read the report of the en- gineers, James, Proctor and Redfern. who made the survey for paving, a synopsis ot which appeared in last week’s Review. Of the $70,000 cost, for pavement and sewers, he pointed out, if suggested frontage rates are adopted, only 819,850 will be borne by town at large, or $1800 a year, a- bout 3 mills additional while a con- siderable sum would be saved in oiling and repairs. A representative of the engineering firm was to come to ex- plain the paving proposition in de, tail. He could not come that even- ing, but will be here some time soon (possibly next week end) to address a public meetinr and "We the rate. payers all possible information. All present spoke and " most all took the platform, where a number of really good addresses, from mayoraity, reeve and council nominees were attentively heard by the ratepayers.
