S. meeting to be held at the home of Miss Nellie MoLean on Tuesday, Fob. 16th. When we look out this Tuesday morning, February 9th, and notice that the snow is almost gone but roads covered with ice, we wonder dare we go out to the mail box ? We have noticed seme people manouverâ€" ing along the road, but could not hear what they were saying, but they were acting queerly. Miss Muriel Watson of Egremont is visiting with Mrs Wilfred Watson. The Institute was held on Thursday at the home of Mrs Elmer â€" Watson with a good attendance. Miss Belle Weir gave a splendid paper on Canaâ€" dian books and authors. Miss Annie Shortreed gave a paper on new year resolutions . Miss Mary McBachern gave a splend‘d address on ‘Cheer up, pleasant days are coming‘. Mrs. W. Aldcorn gave a demonstration _ for cake icing. Mrs Wm. Moody gave an interesting report of the convention in Toronto. Lunch was then served by the hostess assisted by Mrs Boice. It was decided to have a _ crokinole social soon. P Mr. Donalkl Aldcorn, Toronto, spent the weekend at his parental home. A great many of our people are not feeling up to par. Only six puâ€" pils were at school Monday. Whoopâ€" ing cough and other bad colds are prevalent. The John Corbitt family aro among the worst sufferers at present. We hope that very soon with more settled weather, all will be well. We were sorry last week to hear of the sudden death of Mr. Malcolm Mcâ€" Taggart, also of the sickness of Donâ€" ald (Hillies, both of the Hopeville disâ€" trict, and friends of long standing. Miss Campbell, teacher at Boothâ€" ville, was called to her home in Lisâ€" towel last week on account of the death of her aunt, a returned misâ€" sionary from India, who two years ago spent some time in this locality, and endeared herself to everyone. ‘This is the second aunt in a few months Miss Campbell mourns. Mr and Mrs A. L. Hincks _ and family and Mr. Dave Hincks, visited the Hincks families in Egremont on Thursday. Our mail sent by air by Oswald Dingwall three weeks ago, although somewhat delayed, arrived O.;K, and the book on playing checkers is here. Call in: you will be allowed to stuly it. A deputation of â€" ratepayers from the 4th and 6th concessions presentec a petition to the Council, signed by a considerable number of ratepayâ€" ers, asking that a mile and a quarter of roai be opened to connect the 4th con. with the 6th con. between lots 5 and 6 of both concessions. After hearing arguments presented by memâ€" bers of the deputation it was moved by E. F. Sullivan, seconded by F. D‘Arey: That the whole Council be a committee to look into and inspect proposed road between lots 5 and 6 ard report ut April meeting of Counâ€" cil.â€"Carried. Ethel Campbell, Mrs R. Hannam, and Tena Ferguson constitutel the reception coinmittee and Fred Runciâ€" man occupied the box office. Booth Wilson called for _ squares. The floor show, which in past years has been an outstanding feature of the evening, was again very much . so. Marjory â€" Phillips, Grace Francis Campbell and Marjory Saiter did dance numbers, and Audrey Wright gave readings. Mrs. Roosen, (nee Bess Kinnell) won the bridge prize, Margaret Campbell the ladies euchkre prize and Mr. F. McPhail the men‘s euckre prize. In the dances Miss D. Black won the prize in the _ spot dance and in the Special Swinton Park Novelty Dance, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Norman carried off the novelty prize. And the folks respondedâ€"there were more than eighty couples, makâ€" ing it the largest crowd yet, and they were young in years and spirit and good looking, light hearted _ and friendly. Efi'ery thing went lively from first to last. The dance and the orâ€" chestra were so popular, that Garâ€" field Anthony, who had charge _ of the carl room, found himself with only six tables of players.
