Write for illusâ€" PATENTS + Kublai Khan Once Led an Expcâ€" Chinese relations with Japan began in 779 A.D. when the peaceful Sung dynasty was in power in China. Reâ€" lations were of the friendliest, and all the Oriental blandishments of humility and extravagant courtesy went into the exchanges of diplomatic correspondence between the two naâ€" tion. China Has Often Fought The Japs In the twelfth century, however, the Sung dynasty was overthrown by the warâ€"loving Tartars and soon China had changed from a peaceful nation to a warlike nation, The famous Monâ€" gol warrior and emperor, KublA Khan, looking for new lands to conâ€" quer, spied the islands strung along the Chinese coast. These islands, al though volcanic and often shaken by tidal waves and earthquakes, were reâ€" ported to be rich in rice and foodâ€" stuffs. Kublai Khan sent an expediâ€" tion of 10,000 men against Japan. Accustomed to easy success when the very name of Kublai Khan was enough to induce wild terror, the Chinese forces met unexpectedly stun born resistance and returned home in somewhat disgraceful defeat. In 1279 Kublai Khan sent an ultimatum borne by nine envoys. All nine were deâ€" capitated by the Japanese, who had already begun mobilization to meet the invader. Kublai Khan proceeded to call out his mighty military machine, and prepared to embark on a voyage deâ€" signated to teach the Japanese "upâ€" starts" a proper respect for Chinese might. The. Japanese, fighting â€" guerrilla warfare, and finally aided by a mighty typhoon which swept the huge but n controllable Chinese vessels on to * ~anese reefs, won a great victory. Again In 1894 It was the last time there was conâ€" siderable communication between the two countries for many years. Then relations were reâ€"established, and all was goodâ€"fecling and friendship . . . until 1894 when Japan, having underâ€" taken the study of western civilized methods, and western military methâ€" ods, launched a smartly trained miliâ€" tary force against a decadent and paralyzed China to inflict a stunning defeat upon the mainlanders, most of the fighting taking place in Chinese territory. Suicide Problem Is Responsibility The problem of suicide is vast and allâ€"pervading of every rank of society that it constitutes a medicoâ€"social obâ€" ligation of the first importance, Dr. David Kennedy Henderson, noted Edinburgh _ psychiatrist, . said _ last week at the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Henderson, who is Physician Superintendent of the Royal Edinâ€" Hospital for Mental Disorders and Professor of Psychiatry at the Uniâ€" versity of Edinburgh, also discussed the social menace of alcoholism and drug addiction and the instability of the soâ€"called geniusâ€"personality. Education Urged As to the suicide problem, he stressed that it can be successfully met "only by education in its broadâ€" est and finest sense." He acknowlâ€" edged that an advance has been made to the extent that a person attempting suicide is no longer regarded as a felon, but as someone in need of help, a sick man who with suitable measâ€" ures may be reconstituted as a useful meiaber of society. The world‘s largest cutdoor dance floor will be constructed on the wide plaza immediately west of the Electrical and Engineering Building. It will be enâ€" closed and covered with decorative canvas walls and canopy. General Manager Elwood A. Hughes, now en route to Europe to engage atâ€" tractions for this year‘s Exhibition, spent several days in New York arâ€" ranging for the appearance here this year of three of the outstanding bands of the day, Guy Lombardo‘s Royal Canadians, Benny Boodman‘s and Tommy Dorsey‘s. The Ball Room in which famous bands and orchestras have appeared for several years will be devoted to the purposes of the British Government for an exhibit symbolizing Empire transportation and communication,. Dance bands which have appeared at the Exhibition include those of Rudy Vallee, Horace Heidt, Duke Ellâ€" ington, Abe Lyman and Guy Lomâ€" bardo. The Royal Artillery Band of England with a strength of seventyâ€" five musicians, will appear afternoon and evening in the band shell throughâ€" out the Exhibition. Flu Preventative Works With Mice Filling In It is a good plan to use started anâ€" nual flower plants for planting among tulips and other spring flowering bulbs which will be past their best in a few more weeks. The mediâ€" cine is made from sulfanilamide, the sensational new drug made from a red dye which has cured blood poisâ€" oning and helped to kill many difâ€" ferent germ infections in man. There are many type of both quickâ€" growing annuals or perennials, among them ones hardy enough for most seeâ€" tions of this province. Productive Vegetables The gardener with only a little land to spare should concentrate on those vegetables which give the biggest reâ€" turns for the smallest space occupied. Among such kinds are beans, carrots, onions, lettuce, swiss chard, spinach, cucumbers and beets. In the lesserâ€" known vegetables are: leeks, egg and pepper plants broad beans and cos letâ€" tuce. These can all be grown in most districts. Experts advise the inclusion of something new in the vegetable line each year so that variety will be gradually widened. Climbing plants or vines play an important part in any scheme of landâ€" scape gardening, adding a finishing touch to wall, fence or verandah that is not possible by any other means. There is a mistaken idea that such plants may be harmful to brick or stoneâ€"work. Aside from the fact that climbers add a little trouble to the job of painting the woodâ€"work around the doors and windows, authorities claim that there are no harmful effects whatever but, on the other hand, there are several substantial advantages. A house with the walls well screenâ€" ed is much cooler in the hot weather for the simple reason that sun does not reach heat absorbing brick or stone. As for verandahs, the advantâ€" age in shade, coolness and privacy of such natural screens is too obvious to need detailed explanation. Gardening Notes Rand Malartic Two New Countries Will Display Here Norway And Norway and The Netherlands have joined the ranks of foreign countries to be represented in the International Pavilion at the Canadian National Exâ€" hibition this year. Albert Nordhetâ€" mer, Consulâ€"General of The Netherâ€" lands for Ontario, has been notified by his government at Amsterdam that an exhibit is being assembled for shipment to Toronto. Carl J. Printz, Royal Viceâ€"Consul of Norway for Ontario, has advised Exhibition authorities that his governâ€" ment has asked him to open negotiaâ€" tions looking to representation this year. The Exhibition management has assured the government of Norâ€" way that its display and representaâ€" tives will be accorded generous treatâ€" ment. To date the foreign countries inâ€" terested in the development of trade in Canada on a reciprocal basis and that will be represented at the Exhiâ€" bition this year are Finland, The Nethâ€" erlands, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Norâ€" way and Germany. Jan Pawlica, Consulâ€"General for Poland in Canada, has been notified by the State Export Institute ih Warâ€" saw that a shipment of fifteen tons of exhibit material will be sent to Toronto for the Exhibition. hide dying foliage. Then again, quickâ€" growing annuals will always be useful for filling in any blind spots in the perennial beds where winter has been unusually severe. An Alkaline Soil Most trees, shrubs, flowers and grass grow best in a neutral or alkaâ€" line soil. Only a few varieties of plants need an acid condition. How can we tell what kind of soil we have? Buy at any drug store 10 cents worth of litmus paper, take a cupful of the soil, add water and if a blue litmus paper turns red the soil is acid. If it stays blue it is on the alkaline side. In order to make an acid soil "sweet" or alkaline, first get air into the soil by adding sifted coal ashes, cinders, strawy manure, agricultural slag from blast furnaces, or agricul tural lime. Soil must also have drainage for taking away excess water, Plants canâ€" not get food from waterâ€"Jogged earth. The soil may be clay or sand and in either case it must contain humus to supply plant food, Humus is decayed vegetable mattor. ~oil from the top of the ground where vegetables or farm crops have been raised contains humus and ‘s called topsoil, Are Entering Exhibits at ‘The 1938 C.N.E. Discovery that many wild animals suffer from chronic arthritis, one of the commonest and most painful disâ€" eases of man, has been announced as a probably new clue to methods of conquering it. Bpeaking before the American Philâ€" ©sophical Society, one of the oldest scientific organizations in the United States, Dr. Herbert Fox of the Uniâ€" versity of Pennsylvania declared he had found the disease in a large varâ€" lety of animals, both in zoos and in their natural habitat, In Zoos ind Jungle It is frequently found in gorillas, baboons and other great apes related to man, he declar>d, but also is found in other animals, such as hyenas. It is even possible that some of the ancient dinosaurs had terrific cases of arthritis in the joints of their huge bones. The discase in animals appears to be chiefly an affliction .of the spinal colu in, Dr. Fox declared, and the studies made indicate that the shock of walking or running may be the primary cause. He upset several old theories concerning arthritis by deâ€" claring that "there is mno apparent reâ€" lationship" between it and focal inâ€" fections of the body, diets or the . .ace in which a person or animal lives. New Approach to Problem Because of the similarity of the disâ€" ease in animals and man a new apâ€" proach to the study of arthritis, which has been a particularly puzzling modiâ€" cal problem for centuries, is oponed up, said scientists who heard the reâ€" port. By producing it experimentally in animals the causes of it may be fcund and methods of prevention, or at least alleviation of it, may be worked out, they added. Frenchâ€"Canadian OTTAWA.â€"The largest collection of recorded folkâ€"songs in North Amerâ€" ica is filed in the National Museum of Canada here. Seven thousand cylinâ€" drical recordings preserve the lilting songs of the Frenchâ€"Canadian habiâ€" tant, the religious chants of the North American Indian and the narrative tunes of the Eskimo. Tucked away in small outâ€"ofthe way hamlets scattered across the country are found melodies of the early French settlers. In mauy cases the origin and history of the songs have been forgotten but the original beauty remains. These lyrics have been recorded in books and the melodies phonographiâ€" cally by Marius Barbeau and Diamond Jenness, anthropologists at the Naâ€" tional Museum, and some of their confreres. Date Back to 1680 Weddings, village fairs and religious celebrations abound with folkâ€"songs and at these gatherings many new songs come to light. Approximately 4,000 recordings of Frenchâ€"Canadian folkâ€"songs have been made, Some themes date back to 1680, The subject matter is varied â€"legendary, adventurâ€" ous, gallant, inspirational, mocking and capricious. Almost 3,000 songs of the 50 Indian tribes of the woods of North America and songs of the inhabitants of the Arctic rim are included in the collecâ€" tion. Drums, rattles, whistles and horns add accompaniment to the singâ€" ing of the painted Indian warriors at their campfire dances. Believed to be inspired during dreamâ€"ike trances, these original songs of the redman are a beritage. Payment was demandâ€" ed by a father before passing the song down to his son. Even now conâ€" fidence must be established with the Indian before he will consent to sing for a recording. Songs of the Eskimo are changeâ€" able. He sings and plans songs during the spring, summer and fall months to be sung at the dances in the winâ€" ter. Like the modern dance music, some of these songs make a hit and romain favorites from year to year, but more often last only one season. Seeking to increase their trade with Canada and other British Emâ€" pire countries the governments of the British West Indies, eastern group, and British Guiana have notified the Canadian National Exhibition that they will have representative exhibjigs in the Governments Building this year, | Indies Will Show At 1938 C.N.E.
